Dr Kaitlin Sanzone discusses how a single conversation changed how she chose her specialty. Learn the surprising advice that can help you find your perfect medical career fit.
Before starting medical school, I thought for sure I was going to be a surgeon. I thought the OR was the most exciting place, and I thought anatomy and the human body were so fascinating — until I actually got to my rotation.
I completely changed my mind when I had one specific conversation with an attending thatbasically changed how I decided which specialty to go into. He told me to pick a specialty where you find joy in the mundane tasks. Yes, I thought performing surgeries and heart transplants was so cool. Actually, the pre-op and post-op tasks I was not finding enjoyable at all. Then I went into psychiatry and I was like, wait — I love everything about this.I loved talking to patients. I loved talking to patients' families. I loved following up lab values and talking to them about medication options. I realized that I loved the everyday tasks in psychiatry, and that's how I knew it was the right field for me. Use that advice when you are deciding which medical specialty you want to do for the rest of your life.Any views expressed above are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect the views of WebMD/Medscape or its affiliates.Comments on Medscape are moderated and should be professional in tone and on topic.
