The measurable rain will be the first in the region since March 2.

The Bay Area's first measurable rain since March 2 fell overnight and is expected to continue through Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. A month that will be remembered in the Bay Area as the hottest ever in the spring marched away on its final day Tuesday with some nippiness in the air and some rain dropping from the sky.

Atmospheric river storms will be tracked more accurately with new Bay Area weather radar stationsAs spring arrives, the Bay Area heat wave peaks; slight cooldown to follow “This will be over pretty quickly,” National Weather Service meteorologist Nicole Sarment said. “Thursday morning will be our last chance for rain, and after that it will very quickly warm up and dry out into the weekend. We’ll also get the off-shore flow and that will enhance the warming. Beyond that, there is uncertainty as to whether that high-pressure ridge will hang on.” A thicker than usual high-pressure ridge and ensuing record-breaking warmth is what defined March. The weather service said the average high temperature of 62.3 degrees in March was the warmest ever for the month. That figure also would’ve made it the second-hottest April ever and third-hottest May, according to the weather service.late Monday and then overnight into Tuesday, as temperatures fell and rain from one of two systems approaching the area started to fall. The weather service said it won’t fall much harder than a hard drizzle and that most of the rain will happen Wednesday. That’s when a second system will replace the first one as it hightails south. Sarment said Wednesday’s system “is a true Gulf of Alaska low . It’s going to pass near the Canadian and Washington border, but the trailing cold front from that is going to get us. That will lower snow levels and temperatures. It will be pretty chilly.” According to the weather service, the entire region is likely to see a bit heavier rain on Wednesday but it still will be mostly light in most places. The exceptions are along the Peninsula and the North Bay Coast, where a half-inch of rain could fall, and in the higher elevations of the North Bay, where there could be an inch. The rest of the region, including the South Bay and the interior East Bay are likely to get about one-tenth of an inch, the weather service said. High temperatures are expected not to rise above the low 60s. In the Sierra Nevada, the pattern change is likely to bring snow. A weather winter advisory goes into effect at 5 a.m. Wednesday and will last until 8 a.m. Thursday. The weather service said 5 to 10 inches of snow are expected near the Sierra crest, including Donner Pass and 1 to 4 inches could fall in the valleys. Winds could gust as high 100 mph at the crest and 45 to 55 mph in the valleys. Waves on Lake Tahoe could run from 1 to 4 feet high. Travel is likely to be affected, and motorists were urged to pay attention to conditions on Interstate 80 and state Highway 50. The rain that fell overnight into Tuesday was the first precipitation the region has seen in nearly a full month.
