The police report indicated he may have been involved in a fight outside a Cannery Row bar early that morning. Officers had come across the fight at 1:09 a.m. near the Salty Seal Pub. One of the combatants was on the ground, apparently unconscious; the other person fled on foot. Officers chased the fleeing man for about a quarter-mile along Cannery Row and lost sight of him near the Plaza de Monterey, a public area overlooking the bay near the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Meanwhile, the man who had been knocked out was taken for treatment at a hospital. He “did not wish to provide information about the incident,” the police account said. Around 8:15 a.m. Saturday, an employee at the Monterey Plaza Hotel called police to report that the hotel’s surveillance video had recorded a person jumping over a patio railing around 1:10 a.m. The patio is about 25 feet above the rocky beach. With assistance from a Monterey Fire Department boat crew, police searched the area below the hotel. A man was found around 11:53 a.m., “some distance from where he would have fallen,” the police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. This Sacramento suburb is booming.
