Suspect told police there was no communication or confrontation with victim before he approached him from behind, stabbed him and fled the store.A 32-year-old man allegedly told police he fatally stabbed an innocent bystander at a Garland grocery store on March 27, 2026, to “prove he was tough.
”Juan Pedro Reyes was being held Monday on a murder charge in connection with the March 27 fatal stabbing at the Fiesta Mart located in the 2900 block of S. First Street. No bail amount was set, and it was not clear if he has an attorney. Police responded to the scene about 8:05 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing, the affidavit said. Officers found a man, identified as Franky Seleyma Arredondo Barrios, 39, suffering from a stab wound to the neck at the scene. He was transported to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas where he died at 8:34 p.m., according to the affidavit.Officers reviewed in-store security camera footage, where they observed Barrios enter the store with a shopping cart about 7:53 p.m. and head toward the produce section. While Barrios is in the back of the store, the video showed a man, identified as Reyes, running toward the front door and past the registers about 8:03 p.m., the affidavit said. A few minutes later, Barrios approached a cash register “holding his neck” and “waving for help,” according to the affidavit. The video shows Barrios falling to the floor while witnesses attempt to provide medical aid before Garland fire officials arrive on scene. According to the affidavit, investigators conducted an interview with Barrios’s girlfriend, who said he had left the apartment after waking up from a nap about 6 p.m. to get dinner. She told police she began to worry when she hadn’t heard from Barrios for two hours and notified his brothers, who went to the store about 9 p.m.Detectives were notified about 10:30 a.m. Saturday that Reyes was at the department’s front desk and wanted to turn himself in for murder, the affidavit said. Reyes was booked as officers conducted an interview with his mother, who said his father had visited the Fiesta Mart Saturday morning after Reyes told his parents he had stabbed someone there. Reyes’s mother told police they told him the right thing to do was turn himself in, according to the affidavit. After speaking with Reyes’s mother, officers went to the department’s jail to interview Reyes, where he waived his Miranda Rights, according to the affidavit. Reyes told officers he had gone to a skate park about 7 p.m. Friday and experienced “thoughts of hurting someone to prove he was tough,” the affidavit said. He told police he decided to go to Fiesta Mart and pick someone to stab. Reyes said he was in the store for about 30 minutes before deciding on Barrios because he was alone at the back of the store, according to the affidavit. Reyes told police there was no communication or confrontation with Barrios before he approached him from behind, stabbed him and fled the store.Reyes said he hid his knife, beanie, gloves and sweatshirt in a trash can near his house because he “did not want to get caught,” the affidavit said. Police found the items in a storm drain in the area Reyes had specified.
