Randy Larson replaces the retired Steve Mask as Theodore's head football coach.
The veteran assistant coach has officially been named the new head football coach at Theodore High School. Larson was the defensive coordinator for the Bobcats under Steve Mask for the last three seasons.
He was named interim coach“It’s definitely very special,” Larson said of his first head coach job. “I know all the guys who have done it before me, and I understand the responsibility I now have. It’s neat to know I have the responsibility to push it forward. I’m excited to have the torch now and have a chance to run with it.” Larson played running back and linebacker at Theodore from 1996-2000 under former head coach Joe Downey and then-defensive coordinator Bill Meredith. He walked on at Troy before finishing his education at South Alabama. Meredith, who followed Downey as head coach, hired Larson in 2008. He spent six seasons as defensive line or linebackers coach at his alma mater before leaving to coach linebackers at Saraland from 2015-2017. He spent one year as defensive coordinator at Satsuma before returning to Theodore as DC in 2000. “This is a job I’ve wanted for a while being from Theodore and having played here,” Larson said. “It’s something I’ve always looked forward to, and I’m excited to get that opportunity.”“When I left Troy, I started working for a little bit and then realized I needed a job and a career that I’m passionate about and loved to do,” he said. “Teaching football and coaching history has been the thing that has made me the happiest. So that’s what I decided to do, and I haven’t looked back.” The 2025 Bobcats went 8-4, losing at Benjamin Russell in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Theodore has been in the playoffs eight of the last nine years. The Bobcats won the Class 6A, Region 1 title in Eric Collier’s last season as head coach in 2022 and reached the state semifinals. “My goal is honestly to keep the tradition of physical football at Theodore,” Larson said. “We want to be physical at the point of attack and strong defensively. At Theodore, we’ve always hung our hats on running the football and playing tough defense. That won’t change. Our main philosophy will always be to do what is right for the kids and coach them hard. If we make sure we are doing the things with their best interest at heart, the rest will take care of itself.”, Theodore will play in 5A, Region 1 along with most of the teams it has traditionally competed against in the former 6A, Region 1– Baldwin County, Elberta, Gulf Shores, Blount, Murphy, Saraland and Spanish Fort. “It’s an extremely tough region obviously,” Larson said. “You better be ready to play week in and week out. Even teams people might not perceive as being strong can beat you if you aren’t ready. There are good coaches throughout the region.”Ben Thomas is the high school managing producer for AL.com, responsible for prep coverage throughout the state of Alabama.
