Can the next Alabama football offensive line coach's run game coordinator experience help the Tide?
After the unit struggled in 2025, the 48-year-old has his work cut out for him to return to Alabama’s usual standard. Here’s what to know about Klemm.Klemm has never coached in the SEC. However, he has worked with one of the top members of Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama staff.
In 2012 and 2013, Crimson Tide general manager Courtney Morgan was at UCLA, where he served as director of player development. Klemm was on staff there as well, as run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Morgan left UCLA after those two years, spending a few seasons in the private sector before returning to the school side. Klemm remained through the 2016 season. While Morgan stayed in the college game, Klemm’s next stop was the NFL. He took over as offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, and stayed there through 2021. Klemm, who started his coaching career at SMU in 2008, also made a college stop at Oregon, where he was offensive line coach and run game coordinator and also held an assistant head coach title.After playing his college football at Hawaii under June Jones , Klemm was a second-round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. He went to the New England Patriots and won three Super Bowls at the beginning of the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dynasty in Foxboro. After that, he spent the 2005 season with the Green Bay Packers. After he got into coaching, Klemm spent plenty of time in the NFL, as well. He first got into the league with the Steelers in 2019, and remained there for three seasons. His first two years in Pittsburgh, he worked as an assistant offensive line coach under Mike Tomlin, before taking over the main position coach in 2021. After a one-year stop at Oregon, Klemm went back to New England, where he was Belichick’s final offensive line coach for the 2023 season. Klemm did not coach in 2024. He returned to the game last season as an analyst for Lincoln Riley with the Trojans.Klemm will have to rebuild an Alabama offensive line that struggled mightily last season. His run game coordinator background could prove extremely valuable for a Crimson Tide group that never got that element of its game going in 2025, culminating in embarrassing rushing efforts in the SEC championship game and Rose Bowl. The first order of business will be finding new starters at all but one offensive line position. Kam Dewberry, Jaeden Roberts and Geno VanDeMark ran out of eligibility. Parker Brailsford and Kadyn Proctor entered the NFL Draft early, and Wilkin Formby transferred to Texas A&M. That leaves rising sophomore right tackle Michael Carroll as the lone remaining starter. He took over as the starter last season, and looked to be developing nicely as the year progressed. Klemm will likely be forced to rely on several unproven players in key roles, along with some portal pieces, including Racin Delgatty and Jayvin James . The youngsters on the roster include Jackson Lloyd and Will Sanders, along with Michigan transfers Ty Haywood and Kaden Strayhorn. One thing Klemm could try and do that Alabama couldn’t for much of last season is find a consistent five starters up front. If UA doesn’t have to rely on an enormous rotation, it could be big for an offense that will have a new starting quarterback among other skill positions that turned over.
