Open to the public on March 28, here's everything to expect from the show celebrating Europe's surrealist fashion house.
Last Tuesday night, the VA hosted a preview of its highly anticipated Schiaparelli exhibition in London. The exhibition opened to the public this past weekend, but for its inaugural unveiling, the museum invited a star-studded guest list of attendees to view the first UK show dedicated to maison Schiaparelli.
'Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art' explores the history of the storied brand, from the avant-garde approach of its visionary founder, Elsa Schiaparelli, to its influence and impact on fashion in the early-mid 20th century, as well as its successful revival over 50 years after its closure.Best known for its sculptural and surrealist designs, the exhibition spotlights a range of the brand's pioneering sartorial achievements from across the decades. The show comprises 400 objects, with 100 ensembles on display, including Schiaparelli's iconic 1938 Skeleton dress and the 1938 Tears dress, both examples of Salvador Dalí's seminal collaborations with the brand. There are also 50 pieces of artwork on display, alongside accessories, jewelry, furniture, perfumes, and archive material.Through its extensive display of rarely seen garments, the show charts defining moments from Schiaparelli's early collections; standout pieces include one of the brand's very first designs, a trompe l’oeil bow-knot sweater from 1927, as well as striking gowns and dinner suits from the striking Pour le Soir collections. Art and fashion appear concurrently throughout the exhibit, highlighting the intertwined thread that Schiaparelli sought to weave between the two: this is no better underscored than with Salvador Dalí’s radical Lobster Telephone , on display next to the Schiaparelli 1937 Lobster dress that served as the artwork's inspiration.Those familiar with Daniel Roseberry's modern reimagining of Schiaparelli will also get the opportunity to see his creations up close, including the golden bronchial lung necklace and gown worn by Bella Hadid at Cannes in 2021, and the contemporary black-and-gold iteration of the skeleton dress, redesigned for Dua Lipa's appearance at the 2024 Golden Globes.This latest exhibition follows the VA's long-documented advocacy of fashion as an art form, putting it in the company of its previous monumental shows such as those featuring Dior, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen.Below, find a sneak preview of the enchanting ensembles and pieces on display at the VA’s 'Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art' exhibition.'Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art' is on display through November 8, 2026.
