Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner detailed his office's funding requests for next year's city budget on Monday morning.

On Monday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner laid out his office's requests for funding in the hopes of continuing, what he called, a 'jaw-dripping' decrease in crime in the city.to City Council -- and the city's tax-paying populous -- Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said it was his turn to discuss his own office's needs for funding in the coming year.

In fact, in opening his remarks on Monday, Krasner said he felt that his office should echo some of what the mayor does in delivering her budget to the public, to ensure taxpayers know where their money goes when it comes to his office. This coming year, the DA's office is seeking about $4.5 million in new funds for a variety of crime-fighting initiatives. "Our mayor has made it central to what she does to go around the community and to explain to the community the budget and how she views it and for what purpose. That seems like a good idea to me," he said."Seems to me that we should be connected to the community. We should make sure the community -- because, that's where the actual power is -- is aware of the needs of this office, especially in these incredibly important and difficult times." In a statement released ahead of the morning event, Krasner's office said that the district attorney wanted to discuss the request that the office has submitted to Parker's administration concerning funding needed to"continue improving public safety and support for crime victims through modern enforcement strategies in collaboration with our partners in law enforcement and government."across Philadelphia, the city is at a unique place in history -- one where the city could shake off perceptions that claim Philly is a violent, crime-ridden community. "We have a unique opportunity to Philadelphia to go from a reputation that has damaged us economically, has damaged us in many other ways, for being chronically violent to having a very different reputation and that would be for being steadily safe," said the district attorney."Safe! Imagine the impact on tax revenues. Imagine the impact on the willingness of people to come to this great city as a destination city to contribute to that economy, employ the people who live here, etc..."that shows, as of Monday, the city has seen 21 homicides so far this year -- down over 57% from this point last year. And, he said, to keep up this trajectory, he wanted to share his office's funding needs for the coming year. Krasner noted that he believed his office's work in victim's services to help those who have been harmed has played in what he said was a"jaw-dropping" decrease in homicides. If trends continue this year as they have until this point, Krasner estimated, the city could potentially see less than 100 homicides for the year. "It's not just a question of how many shootings occur. It's a question of how it is that this has changed," said the district attorney. In total, Krasner said the entire yearly budget for the District Attorney's Office is"on the order of $50 - 60 million" which is only a small part of the city's $6.9 billion proposed budget. On top of this, the DA's office is requesting an additional $3.4 million in funds for personnel costs and about another $1 million for equipment and software costs. During the event, officials with the District Attorney's Office said the funding request would break down into: $1.06 million to establish a repeat domestic violence offender task force to focus on cases where there's a high risk of lethality and repeat offenses. $884,000 to hire additional Philadelphia County detectives to focus on public safety initiatives and issues that impact senior citizens across the city.$1.4 million for the office's gun violence task force to strengthen investigations into street-group related shootings. At the end of the presentation, Krasner noted nothing is set in stone, but the office hopes that city officials would consider these increases to his office's budget as they discuss the mayor's proposal in the coming weeks. "The amount of money that we are talking about here is minute," said Krasner, pointing out the size of the city's overall budget."It frankly makes absolutely no sense to fail to properly fund these efforts." City Council has 90 days before the end of the current fiscal year -- which ends on June 30, 2026 -- to approve a city budget.Pope Leo XIV
