Duke sent a farewell message to this year’s team just days after their heartbreaking loss to UConn in the NCAA Tournament.
Blue Devils suffered one of the most heartbreaking losses in recent memory on Sunday evening, falling 73-72 to the No. 2 UConn Huskies in the Elite Eight of the Duke held a 72-70 lead with 10 seconds remaining.
They didn’t even have to cross half court on the inbound, but instead of fouling, the Huskies looked for a quick turnover. The Blue Devils tried to move the ball up the court, but Cayden Boozer’s pass was tipped, stolen, and ended up in the hands of true freshman Braylon Mullins, who knocked down a game-winning three-pointer with just 0.4 seconds left on the clock.Now, more than 24 hours later, Duke is beginning to process what unfolded in the game, in which they blew a 19-point lead and missed out on a trip to the Final Four for potentially the second consecutive year. On Tuesday morning, the program sent a farewell message to its 2025-26 team, a group that is expected to see significant roster departures. "Grateful for this squad," Duke wrote alongside a picture of the entire team, highlighting their 35-3 record and major accomplishments, which included being ACC tournament and regular season champions, earning one of the four No. 1 seeds in March Madness, and going 15-0 at home. Fans reacted to Duke’s farewell message, celebrating a remarkable season despite the disappointing finish. "Thank you for an amazing year and for exceeding everyone’s expectations before the season started," one fan wrote. Another added,"Run it back, boys. Don’t leave us with an unfinished job. We all believe and love this group!""I’m so thankful for all the memories I have of this team. From helping with the poster photoshoot to going to the games, watching them in Cameron was pure joy. So thankful and so fun. I’m a Duke fan for LIFE," one more fan commented.Right now, how the team will look next season is still somewhat uncertain. It’s all but certain they’ll lose Cameron Boozer to the NBA, and Maliq Brown is a senior. After stellar seasons, Isaiah Evans and Caleb Foster could also decide to enter the NBA draft — or they might return to join a strong incoming freshman class. Players such as Cayden Boozer, Nikolas Khamenia, Dame Sarr, and Patrick Ngongba will also have to make decisions about their futures, along with other high-profile underclassmen.
