Ilia Malinin kicked off the figure skating offseason with one of his most ridiculous moves to date. And he did it all in jeans.
The 21-year-old has had the most stressful two months of his life, from preparing for the Winter Olympic Games to being one of the main characters of the event, to then having to shake off a disappointing finish to defend his crown at the Figure Skating World Championships.
Malinin got a bit of redemption for his follies at the Olympics with a third-straight men's individual world title in Prague, and then finally had some fun after weeks of drama following his every move. At the exhibition gala event to close out the figure skating season and Worlds, Malinin starred as one of the final performers to take the ice. After dazzling all season long and unleashing backflip after backflip in competition, now that it's legal, Malinin might have pulled off his most unbelievable backflip yet on Sunday. During the free-for-all exhibition event, Malinin held nothing back heading into the offseason, also performing his iconic quadruple axel as if it were any other move in his arsenal. Overall, it was a strong end to the year for the world's best male skater. Although his two-plus-year winning streak came to an end at the Olympics, the American is only looking forward, announcing after his third world title that he would not be retiring and is excited for next season.
