Hulk roaring in rage in 'The Incredible Hulk'.
It cannot be ignored that the Hulk’s story has stalled in the MCU following what felt like a disjointed arc across different films. Of course, this multi-film run was because Marvel did not have the film rights to make a Hulk solo film, so in a way, one could argue that they have done a fair job portraying a character who can only play a supporting role rather than lead his own project.
However, it is difficult not to reflect on Louis Leterrier’s comments from 2008 in an MTV News interview, after he directed The Incredible Hulk, surrounding how he wanted to make the Hulk a villain for The Avengers. The potential this would have offered feels like a huge waste, now that we probably won't get it now that we have Smart Hulk. ‘The Incredible Hulk’ Was Intentionally Left To Set Up the Hulk as a Potential Villain for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes During an interview in 2008, Leterrier said that he wanted the final shot of The Incredible Hulk to be ambiguous as to Bruce Banner’s intentions. In the final scene, Bruce is shown meditating in a remote cabin in British Columbia, smiling as his eyes light up green. Leterrier explained that we are meant to ask"Is he enjoying it? Is he malicious?" after seeing this scene. This would have led to The Hulk potentially becoming the"uncontrollable beast" that the Avengers would have had to team up to defeat. Currently, that feels impossible and a missed opportunity. Since we won't be getting a Hulk film anytime soon, making him the antagonist would have been the perfect way to focus on the character rather than give him a supporting role. As we saw in Avengers: Infinity War with Thanos , the villain has the opportunity to become the hero of their own story, whereas Hulk has had to support other characters such as Thor through their arcs. We could have explored Hulk as a threat yet someone who still wants to do good, as his conflict would come from an"agenda you understand." This would have made him, as Leterrier intended, not a “one-dimensional bad guy” but someone who simply disagreed on an ideological level with the others and this caused an escalated conflict. Posts The MCU Has Proved Hulk Is More Interesting as a Villain Than Hero Close Both recently and in the past, Hulk's best moments in the MCU are as a villainous force that makes us fear for the safety of others. Whether this is attacking Iron Man in Age of Ultron and having to deal with the trauma of that in human form afterward, or battling Thor in The Avengers and Ragnarök, he provides an incredible test for the heroes. Not only is he the strongest and nearly immortal, but the rage in Hulk provides something truly frightening as we know he won't hold back. While it isn't Bruce, Captain America: Brave New World showed that a Red Hulk chasing Sam through cherry blossom trees can have us in terror as the threat gets closer, similar to when Hulk chased Black Widow in The Avengers. There is also the emotional conflict that comes from making Hulk a villain, as not only does Bruce typically view himself as a peaceful individual, but we see that Steve Rogers and Tony Stark instantly respect him when they meet the gamma scientist. Steve sees Bruce's value, and Tony can't help but poke the bear to see if he can unleash Banner's destructive side while complimenting his peer's scientific work. Therefore, a battle between the Avengers and Hulk wouldn't be an easy challenge for our heroes, as they wouldn't want to kill someone who isn't completely evil. Perhaps, following this Doctor Doom arc, we'll get to see a breakdown in Hulk's mental state and see the monster unleashed. Until then, we will only have Letterier's comments to wonder about what may have been in a Hulk vs Avengers battle.
