The San Antonio Housing Trust’s efforts to purchase more property are part of its strategy to preserve or “bank” land for affordable housing.

As concerns about a lack of more affordable housing, gentrification and erasure of historic buildings in the city center mount, a San Antonio nonprofit is seeking to acquire a cluster of mostly vacant structures and land on the near West Side as part of its quest to create a “critical mass of publicly owned properties.” The San Antonio Housing Trust then would consult with the residents on developing those properties.

nonprofit wants to buy land near VIA Centro Plaza where affordable apartments have been planned Projects proposed for some of those buildings have fallen through, such as a plan to turn the National Grocer building into apartments. A city panel rejected a request by the owners of the Rich Book Building and the adjacent building to raze the historic structures, a proposal decried by West Side organizations.

West Side balancing act: Nonprofit working to renovate buildings without pushing out residents. The housing trust also will work with Corazón Ministries and its consultants to help that nonprofit acquire land and plan for a larger facility to serve its homeless clients. The board of the city’s Westside Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone gave the green light Tuesday to providing $250,000 to the housing trust and $125,000 to Corazón for that work.
