Community land trusts are relatively new in San Antonio, but not nationwide. Some 309 land trusts have been set up since 1969, according to one group.
The San Antonio City Council gave the green light Thursday to a policy that could give rise to more affordable housing in the long term for lower- and middle-income families in the area. Council members voted to adopt a policy for designating community land trusts, mechanisms in which a nonprofit buys the land a house sits on and leases it to a buyer at a certain income level.
West Side nonprofits seek to form community land trusts for preserving affordability Nonprofits must provide information to the city about what services their land trust will provide, who it will serve, how it aligns with the city’s housing goals, its financial viability and what they’ve done to get community support. City Council then gets the final say to approve or reject an organization’s application.
Nonprofit wants to create community land trust in South Texas Medical Center area Establishing a land trust or helping an organization launch one was among the recommendations in the city’s Strategic Housing Implementation Plan, a document council members adopted in 2021 to guide housing production. It identifies up to 120% of the area median income as the target income level for land trusts.
