An update to the brutal student violence that's been erupting throughout the Garfield Heights School District. Police records show a number of vicious student fights have broken out since the new school year began.
This past June, we told you about numerous brutal brawls that have broken out at Garfield Heights elementary, middle and high schools. It has now been more than three months since the new 2024-25 school year began – and we wanted to know if there have been any changes to the number of violent incidents reported at the high school.
We reviewed police records detailing recent incidents of physical altercations between students for the 2023-24 school year and part of 2024-25. While these records don’t include the incidents school officials handled internally — they document which ones rose to the level of police involvement.19 Investigates wanted to know if there have been any recent changes or improvements made at the high school since that time. We requested all police reports involving student violence at Garfield Heights High School over a nine-month period – beginning the first day of the 2023-24 school year – August 21, 2023, through October 31, 2024 – the first two months of the 2024-25 school year.Six of them were captured on video. Beginning in September of 2023, student cell phone video shows three girls hollering and slamming each other in the hallway. The next month, a student recorded video of a brutal fight between two girls at the homecoming dance. He and another staff member forced the girls to the floor by straddling them with their body weight. In November, another student’s cell phone captured two girls in mutual head locks, throwing punches on the stairwell. A staff member can be seen rushing in, unsuccessfully attempting to break them up.The next month – a cell phone captured video of a brutal beating outside the school – as one boy was sucker punched by another. According to the police report, the student’s jaw was broken in multiple places and his lungs filled up with fluid. He was rushed to the hospital and taken into surgery. His attacker can be seen pounding him repeatedly in the face and neck. Then, this past August – on the second day of the new school year – surveillance video shows a girl getting jumped by two others in the parking lot. When it was over, the girl had to be rushed to the hospital for a possible broken nose.15-year-old fatally shot by Akron Police identified; Mayor issues statement
