Brookes, who teaches in San Jose's Franklin-McKinley School District, recounted his experience, expressing gratitude for surviving. The shooting occurred as he was socializing with friends at Parish Publick House on November 15th. He was transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he spent four days.
The bullet remains lodged in his back. Brookes has been teaching students with disabilities for over two decades and had just reunited with a friend after 20 years, only to be wounded together during the shooting. The suspects, a 20-year-old male and a 16-year-old juvenile, were arrested by the Santa Cruz Police a week after the incident
