The City of Austin is moving forward with finding a new and permanent police chief but without Interim Chief Robin Henderson on the candidate list. "She's been probably one of the best chiefs one could hope to have," said President of the Austin Police Association, Michael Bullock.
A memo sent Friday from Austin City Manager TC Broadnax said Henderson will retire once a new police chief is hired-- ending her nearly 27 years with the City of Austin. Henderson entered the role as interim chief last September after Joseph Chacon announced his own retirement.District 6 Austin City Councilwoman Mackenzie Kelly said the next chief will have big shoes to fill. "I know Chief Henderson has trained probably about 80% of the department," said Kelly, "She was a training officer for a long time and so she has the trust of the team over there, and we need someone who can come in as a new chief and get that same level of trust amongst the ranks." This announcement comes as the City of Austin and the Austin Police Association are still negotiating a long-term labor contract.RELATED| Interim Austin police chief not seeking permanent role, announces retirement CBS Austin spoke to Broadnax before Henderson's retirement announcement-- he said, filling her role will help move the process along for finalizing a contract. "My recruitment for, and the beginning processes of a permanent chief selection, will add to the contract that we ultimately get approved-- but also that person leading the organization and implementing that contract," said Broadnax. During Henderson's time with the department and as interim chief-- she made strides to better staff APD, along with implementing measures to be more transparent with the public. It was three weeks ago she and the department faced backlash for a letter they drafted, but ultimately did not send, supporting the pardon of Daniel Perry. Perry was convicted of killing a Black Lives Matter protestor in the summer of 2020-- then was pardoned by Governor Greg Abbott last month. In response at the time, District 2 Councilwoman, Vanessa Fuentes, issued a statement saying in part, "Disappointed to learn that APD leadership considered advocating for pardoning a convicted murderer.""I'm happy that we'll close that search on Monday and hopefully have candidates available to look at moving forward," said Councilwoman Kelly.June 10th: Applications for the role close.Week of July 8th: Final interviews begin, and the City Manager's office will decide on a final candidate. This process moves forward with Henderson's colleagues saying, she will leave behind a storied legacy. "She's served this city with extreme dignity and pride and professionalism that embodies a lot of what is expected of an officer here," said Bullock. The City Manager's memo said Henderson will remain in her role until a new chief is hired and will help during the transition process.
