director Reinaldo Marcus Green has broken his silence on the special’s brutal opening dog scene. Fans flooded social media with visceral reactions after the Special Presentation dropped on Disney+.
Green defended the creative choice during a recent interview, citing extensive test screenings. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green addressed the controversial opening scene where a dog is killed in The Punisher: One Last Kill. Green confirmed the moment was deliberately placed to establish the brutality of Frank Castle’s world and set up the character’s emotional payoff later in the special.
“I love dogs. And it was hard for me too, man. It was really hard,” Green said. The director consulted star Jon Bernthal throughout the process, noting that Bernthal’s father led the Humane Society.
Green also mentioned that the actor owns pit bulls and is a devoted dog lover himself.
"We questioned that through the very, very end through the test screenings," Green said. "It was vital to this particular piece. " Users on X expressed strong emotional reactions to the scene shortly after the Special Presentation began streaming on Disney+. One user posted “F**k man, that was a hard watch” alongside footage from the special.
Other users connected the moment to broader genre conventions across action cinema. One user posted “Holy S**t John Wick won’t like this”, referencing the franchise built around a similar inciting incident involving a beloved dog.
However, Green acknowledged the cardinal filmmaking rule against harming animals on screen but ultimately defended the creative choice.

Green stressed that without character motivation, the moment would not have made the final cut of the special.
