HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio - A Wyoming man accused of locking a teenage girl in a dog kennel was handed his fourth indictment Tuesday, bringing the total to 22 charges, according to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office.
Barry Bedenkop, 61, received 12 additional charges, including six counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and six charges of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor. Prosecutors said that the new indictment alleges that images of the victim and two other young victims were found on Bedenkop’s computers. Bedenkop allegedly forced a young girl into a cage, repeatedly sexually abused her and exploited her through explicit images he would take.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich previously said investigators believe the abuse began when the victim was as young as 5.
“This defendant subjected his victim to years of horrific abuse beginning when the child was very young,” Pillich said. Prosecutors said delays are common in cases of sustained abuse because the victim endured extreme trauma, manipulation, isolation and intimidation from a young age that deterred her from coming forward.
“It is unfathomable what this child went through. Not going to school, being threatened, being sexually abused. We think there were physical abuse coming out as well, and certainly the emotional trauma from a very young age,”“We intend to pursue full accountability for the horrific abuse alleged in this case and to ensure this defendant never again has the opportunity to harm another child,” she said.
A criminal complaint said Bedenkop admitted to putting the teen in the closet during their investigation.
“He was a very controlling person. He threatened to shoot the dogs belonging to this child if the child did not obey him. He confined her to a dog cage, sometimes to a closet, we believe that was once a month for a period of years,” Pillich previously said about Bedenkop. He faces a life sentence and remains at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $461,000 bond from the initial charges, with another arraignment expected in the coming days.
