AI studio Promise acquires online film school Curious Refuge to creat an AI filmmaking talent pipeline, focusing on artist-led generative AI storytelling.
AI entertainment studio Promise , backed by Peter Chernin’s North Road and Andreessen Horowitz, has made its first acquisition, acquiring AI-centric film school Curious Refuge . Founded by former Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos, Promise aims to build a slate of films and series produced with generative AI tools.
Curious Refuge, co-founded by Caleb and Shelby Ward, offers online courses, workshops, and meetups to help filmmakers and creatives use AI in their work. Since launching in 2020, the company has worked with over 4,000 people from 171 countries, teaching AI filmmaking, animation, advertising, and documentary production.“One of the things we really stressed when we announced Promise is that we’re building this studio from the ground up,” said Strompolos. “We think this is a transformational moment in entertainment, and we’re building Promise in the era of generative AI around artists who know how to harness this technology.” The acquisition of Curious Refuge will enable Promise to cultivate a talent pipeline versed in AI production techniques. The studio plans to leverage Curious Refuge as a resource for training talent, identifying new creators, and supporting the industry’s adoption of AI.Elon Musk Vs. Federal Agencies: Republicans—Including Hegseth, Patel—Oppose Email Demand As Deadline Looms“We see Curious Refuge as something special,” Strompolos noted. “It can be a place to train talent and open doors, whether they’re working on Promise’s original productions or projects across the industry.” Ward highlighted the diverse backgrounds of Curious Refuge’s alumni, which include Academy Award winners as well as international creatives. “We’ve built a resource for artists to learn the latest AI techniques and contextualize them into practical workflows,” Ward said. “Joining Promise opens up more opportunities for our students to showcase their skills.” While terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Promise’s goal is to create an efficient, artist-led AI production pipeline. “It’s complicated right now,” Strompolos admitted, “but over time, we aim to build a process that’s efficient, collaborative, and produces high-quality results."
