The 25th anniversary of the Halo franchise saw the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a modern remake of the original game. In celebration of the anniversary, Halo: Waypoint Chronicles Volume One was released on May 26, a collection of over 30 short stories spanning the entire timeline of the Halo universe.
2026 marks the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest sci-fi franchises ever to emerge from the gaming world — Halo . Starting with Bungie's Halo : Combat Evolved on the original Xbox, the series is responsible for redefining the landscape of video games and, more specifically, what a first-person shooter should be on a console.
It took the medium to an entirely new scale, introducing a sweeping intergalactic war between humanity and the alien Covenant and placing players in the middle of it as Master Chief, a Spartan supersoldier who has been at the frontlines to finish the fight time and again and is now inseparable from the Microsoft brand. The universe has since expanded to include tie-in novels, comics, animated films, and an ill-fated Paramount+ live-action series, yet, after years of success, Halo rests in an awkward place.
Microsoft's killer app last deployed Master Chief back in 2021 with Halo Infinite, which, as of November, has received its final major update. Despite initial plans for the game to live up to the"infinite" title and receive years of support over continuing numbered releases, Halo Studios is instead refocusing its efforts on other new titles amid a restructuring at Xbox.
Its highest priority of late has been Halo: Campaign Evolved, a modern remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign that, in a first for the series, will also appear on the rival PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC later this year. Longtime fans have been more mixed about the title and how it will try to recreate the magic, but there is at least something exciting on the horizon coming for anyone interested in new Halo adventures.
In celebration of the milestone anniversary, Halo: Waypoint Chronicles Volume One is finally set to release on May 26. Previously set to debut in March, this collection of over 30 short stories from across the Halo universe gathers 24 tales originally only available online, as well as ten entirely new adventures in one over 600-page paperback, along with other intel items and vignettes with lore implications tying into Halo Infinite.
These stories span the entire timeline of the expanded sci-fi world, from the time of the ancient forerunners to the war between the UNSC and the Banished. The collection is authored by two veterans of the series in Halo Studios senior franchise story lead Jeff Easterling and franchise writer Alexander Wakeford. It's a big new addition to the franchise's book collection, which has grown quite massive over the years, including the classic that started it all, Halo: The Fall of Reach. This new volume will be the first short story collection Halo has seen since 2015's Halo: Fractures. As for the next game, Campaign Evolved is expected to release sometime this summer, though an exact date hasn't been officially confirmed.
