ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Kevin Carminy’s yard is filled with colorful chainsaw carvings, but four years ago, it looked a lot different.
“I’ve never been artistic. I like to doodle, but that’s about as far as my artistic abilities ever went,” Carminy said.
“My wife actually went to visit some family, and she was gone for like a month,” Carminy said. “I was sitting here bored to death. ”From seven hours to 30 minutes The 42-year-old discovered a talent he never knew he had.
Now 47 and about to retire from the Air Force, Carminy can carve a bear in 30 minutes and goes by the name ‘ “Finding out that I could do this at 42 years old, was like, that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he said. His process starts with large cuts before moving to detail work.
He made a gnome during the interview with Alaska’s News Source in just thirty minutes... beginning with a nose, then adding a hat, beard and arms. After carving, he burns the wood and hand paints each piece. Each piece in his collection is hand carved and hand painted. One bench took about a month to complete, with his daughter designing the bench rest.
“I think I just like the whole, you know, creating something out of trash, you know, like something that someone would have burned or somebody thought was just the eyesore and I can take it and I can make it look like something that they want to spend money on,” Carminy said. “No one frowns when they see chainsaw carvings, everybody smiles and that’s the fun part,” he said.
“It’s never too late and just have fun...find something that you love to do and do it,” he said.
