A pedestrian was hit and killed by an SUV in Anchorage Thursday
Preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was crossing the road west of Eide Street outside the crosswalk when the SUV struck them while traveling east, police say. The driver, identified as 61-year-old John Ivory , left the scene.
Officers and medics from the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the incident in the area of Fireweed Lane and D Street around 9:35 p.m. Life-saving measures were attempted but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Ivory was found a short time later and remanded to Anchorage Jail for DUI, according to the police. The victim’s identity will be released once next-of-kin procedures have been completed. Fireweed Lane was closed going westbound at D Street while investigators with the Major Collision Investigation unit processed the scene.
