The text explores the recurring theme of superheroes battling each other in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discussing various instances from the comics and films.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe , most of the movies build up to a superhero battling a villain to save the world. From the first Avengers movie, where the team battled villains like Loki, to future battles with Ultron and Thanos, the films see Earth's Mightiest Heroes fighting the universe's deadliest villains.
However, while each MCU movie usually has a powerful villain, from the Mandarin and Kang to Baron Zemo and Dormammu, there are also times when the superheroes fight each other. This goes back to Marvel Comics itself. In the 1970s, one of the earliest crossovers saw the Avengers fighting the Defenders.
In the 1980s, Marvel went all in on the idea with the Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions, where the Grandmaster and Death played a game for the life of the Grandmaster's brother, the Collector. The game was pitting Grandmaster's team of heroes against Death's team, and the heroes were forced to fight. This has become more commonplace in the 2000s and beyond, where heroes often fought each other without anyone forcing them into the situation.
Marvel's Civil War crossover event, and the follow-up, Civil War II, saw the entire line of heroes fighting over disagreements. Avengers vs. X-Men and X-Men vs. Inhumans continued the idea of heroes fighting each other, and it seems that the trend played over into the MCU. Hawkeye Vs. Black Widow: Avengers: Endgame The Black Widow and Hawkeye fight in Avengers: Endgame was not like any other fight in an MCU movie.
That is because they weren't fighting to hurt each other, but to save each other. This happened when the two Avengers were sent to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone, so the Avengers could reverse the Snap.
However, the Red Skull informs them they have to sacrifice someone they love to gain the Soul Stone. Hawkeye chooses himself, and he takes down Black Widow and runs toward the cliff.
However, she strikes back, and the two fight each other for the right to die and to save the other. It is brutal and quick, and Black Widow wins the fight and dies to allow Hawkeye to return with the Soul Stone. This is a hero vs. hero fight between two heroes who love each other as best friends, and the end was highly emotional, with Hawkeye never fully recovering from it.
Sam Wilson & Winter Soldier Vs. John Walker: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is one of the MCU's lowest-rated Disney+ shows based on critics' and audience reviews, there was a lot to like about it. The superhero with the best character arc was Sam Wilson, and his story of rising from the struggles of a Black man in the South to becoming the new Captain America was well done.
John Walker's introduction was also great, creating a character fans wanted to see knocked down a peg, making him an exact duplicate of his comic book counterpart. That made the big fight at the GRC summit in New York, where Falcon and Winter Soldier fought Walker's Captain America, so great. All three were heroes, but John was starting to struggle with his morality as he tried to replace Steve Rogers in the role.
The fight was brutal and harsh, and it ended with Sam Wilson walking away with the shield and the new role of Captain America. For Walker, he became the U.S. Agent in the Thunderbolts. Yelena Vs. Black Widow: Black Widow The story in Black Widow took place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, even though the movie was released after both of those.
There was a big fight in the opening of the movie between Black Widow and a woman named Yelena Belova, whom Widow had tracked down to Budapest. The two women had a brutal and hard-fought battle that destroyed the apartment building and ended with them calling a truce.
What made this fight so emotional and unique was that it turned out that Black Widow and Yelena Belova were raised as sisters, as both were children brought into America to be sleeper cells for the Soviet Union. Black Widow escaped thanks to SHIELD, but Yelena was kept in Russia and served the Red Room, causing resentment between the sisters.
Doctor Strange Vs. Scarlet Witch: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness While the Scarlet Witch took a full villain turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she was a hero for years before this happened, so her fight with Strange and America Chavez was a case of heroes fighting a former hero, with Wanda Maximoff's soul on the line. The road to this point was intense, with Wanda going from a young hero that Hydra experimented on to an Avenger to a fugitive in Captain America: Civil War.
She even had her own Disney+ series in WandaVision, where her mind broke after Vision's death in Avengers: Infinity War, and she created a utopian world with twin boys. When she lost that false world, she snapped and became so powerful that she killed the most powerful superheroes in another world and threatened to bring the MCU down.
Wanda would have won this battle too if she hadn't brought a mountain down on herself when her twins from another dimension recoiled from her in horror. Captain America Vs. Iron Man: Captain America: Civil War The fight between Captain America and Iron Man was the big selling point of Captain America: Civil War.
Cap and Iron Man were two of the big three MCU heroes, alongside Thor, so when the time came for them to go to war against each other, it was a fan's dream to see who would win between Cap and Iron Man. Of course, the MCU had the entire fight end in a draw, with Captain America getting the upper hand before leaving Iron Man alone.
This fight was a three-way battle, as Iron Man wanted to kill the Winter Soldier when he learned Bucky had killed Howard and Maria Stark while brainwashed by Hydra. Cap, knowing his friend was not to blame, fought to protect him, and it ended up even duplicating the shot from one of the Civil War comics covers with Iron Man's repulsors smashing into Cap's shield.
Thor Vs. Hulk: Thor: Ragnarok Neither Thor nor Hulk was part of the Civil War storyline, so they never had a chance to fight each other or the other heroes. Hulk was stranded on Sakaar while Thor was in Asgard.
However, they made up for that loss in Thor: Ragnarok. In this movie, Thor and Loki try to find Odin, whom Loki had stranded on Earth, and then watch as their father dies. This unleashed Hela, and in an accident on the Rainbow Bridge, Thor and Loki also ended up in Sakaar. Hulk had been kept as a gladiator for the Grandmaster, and he forced Thor and Hulk to fight each other in the arena.
This was as great a battle as anyone could have wanted from the two MCU heavyweights. Hulk was about to win when Thor was able to call on lightning without wielding Mjölnir for the first time, and then Grandmaster ended the fight by activating Thor's control collar. Neither man clearly won, which was how this fight should always end.
Hulk Vs. Hulkbuster Iron Man: Avengers: Age Of Ultron In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hulk was fighting to regain control and not rage out, and it took a lot to keep him a team player. That all ended when Wanda Maximoff hexed Hulk and caused him to lose control. Hulk attacked the Avengers and went on a rampage through downtown Johannesburg. This caused Iron Man to call on special armor that Marvel Comics fans know well.
Iron Man used his Hulkbuster armor and fought Hulk one-on-one. Hulk began to get the advantage when Iron Man's armor was damaged, but Iron Man was ready for that, and the armor kept repairing itself. It wasn't until Wanda's hex began to wear off that Hulk calmed down, and the fight finally ended. This gave the MCU a savage Hulk, something that has been missing from most of his appearances to date.
Thor Vs. Iron Man Vs. Captain America: The Avengers The first Avengers movie had a lot of heavy lifting, as it brought the team together for the first time. Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor had already been introduced in the MCU, as had Hulk . The only new characters were Hawkeye and Black Widow.
However, for the three main Avengers, the best way to have them meet each other was to have them fight each other. This happened when Thor was trying to get Loki, while Iron Man and Captain America wanted to bring Loki into SHIELD. When Thor wouldn't allow this to happen, the three heroes began fighting in the woods.
Iron Man and Thor traded blows, Thor called down lightning, and then threw Mjölnir at Captain America, who deflected it and brought down all the trees in the area. The scene created the template for all future scenes of heroes fighting when they meet.
Team Cap Vs. Team Iron Man: Captain America: Civil War The Captain America vs. Iron Man fight from Captain America: Civil War was great, but the best hero vs. hero fight scene in the movie was when all the Avengers went to battle against each other. The United Nations wanted all superheroes to sign the Sokovia Accords or be arrested. Captain America refused and went on the run. Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch joined him.
They ended up in a giant fight at the Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany, where Iron Man was waiting with his team, including Black Panther, Black Widow, War Machine, Vision, and Spider-Man. The fight had a lot of big moments, including War Machine almost getting paralyzed, and twists, including Black Widow switching sides mid-battle. Spider-Man's MCU debut was one of the biggest moments, but this was a massive fight scene that only had heroes fighting each other.
Bucky Winter Soldier Vs. Captain America: Captain America: The Winter Soldier One of the best hero vs. hero fight scenes in the MCU was also in what many critics call the best movie in the entire MCU. At the time, the Winter Soldier wasn't a hero, as he was brainwashed by Alexander Pierce and was attempting to assassinate Nick Fury, so Hydra could complete the takeover of SHIELD and the United States government.
When Captain America figured out that the Winter Soldier was Bucky Barnes, it changed everything. The fight started as a highway ambush, and while Cap tried to get through to the brainwashed Bucky, the Winter Soldier just kept fighting back without showing any emotion.
The result of this fight was a stalemate, but it was a huge moment for both Captain America and Bucky, and it helped lead to everything that followed in the MCU, from Captain America: Civil War to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
