The little girl's 'charred' body was found in a field off Eiler Lane in 1979.
Once only known as “ Baby Angel ,” 19-month-old Velina Jeter has been identified as the victim in the late 70s homicide case, Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco announced Friday.
Jeter’s “charred” body was found in a field on Eiler Lane, Sammarco said. She died from head trauma, the coroner explained.
“How did she get here? ” Sammarco questioned.
“How did she become a victim of homicide? Velina Jeter was 20 months old when her charred body was found in a field on Eiler Lane, Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco announced Friday. Getting to the point where officials could identify the body was nearly two decades in the making.
Download the FREE FOX19 NOW news app for Android In 2021, law enforcement went back to work to identify the little girl who was found in the field on Eiler Road in 1979. It was in 2025 that the community corporation helped track down close family members of the little girl. Law enforcement reached out to the family members, and that is what led to the eventual identification of Jeter, according to officials.
The Hamilton County coroner said Jeter’s parents, Sharon Jeter and Barry Lee Valentine, are deceased, but she does have family members still living in Columbus. There is no reason, at this time, to think the parents are suspects in Jeter’s death, an official said.
