Dune Movies To End After Dune: Part Three; Netflix Adaptation Of Philip K. Dick's The World Jones Made To Be The Follow-up

Denis Villeneuve has confirmed Dune: Part Three as his last movie in the series, leaving the fate of the franchise's future unknown. However, Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Philip K. Dick's The World Jones Made could potentially serve as the franchise's perfect follow-up. The adaptation is based on a cult classic story by the iconic sci-fi author, which shares several parallels with the Dune franchise. The show revolves around characters like Floyd Jones, who gains the ability to foresee the future.

As director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed, Dune: Part Three will be his last movie in the series. The sci-fi fantasy franchise's future beyond the third movie remains unknown, but Netflix 's upcoming Philip K. Dick adaptation could fill the void it will leave behind.

The Philip K. Dick adaptation in question is based on a cult classic story written by the legendary sci-fi author, which shares quite a few parallels with Dune. Many Philip K. Dick books and stories have been picked up for on-screen adaptations in the past, even though his works are not always easy to adapt.

While Ridley Scott's Blade Runner loosely based its story on PKD's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Steven Spielberg and Richard Linklater directly adapted Philip K. Dick's Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly, respectively. 1990's Total Recall is also based on a PKD story, while The Man in the High Castle is known to be among some of the better small-screen adaptations of the author's works. Netflix has now taken it upon itself to adapt Philip K. Dick's relatively obscure 1956 novel, The World Jones Made.

Considering the original book's story, the show could be the Dune franchise's perfect follow-up. Netflix’s The World Jones Made Can Be The Dune Movies' Perfect Followup Titled The Future Is Ours, Netflix's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's The World Jones Made does not have a confirmed release date yet.

However, it will likely premiere towards the end of 2026 or sometime in early 2027. Considering how it will likely land on Netflix after Dune: Part Three's premiere, it could serve as the movie franchise's follow-up. In terms of the scale of its storytelling, PKD's The World Jones Made is relatively smaller. It does not unfold across multiple planets and primarily revolves around human characters.

Just like Dune, though, it focuses on the curse of precognition and the dangerous allure of a messiah. Similar to Paul Atreides from Dune, Floyd Jones gains the ability to"see" the future. His foresight, however, proves to be more of a curse than a blessing because the future is already set in stone and there is nothing he can do to change it.

Through its protagonist, The World Jones Made also deconstructs the"chosen one" trope by showing how, like Paul, Floyd, too, becomes a political demagogue after starting out as a harmless carnival fortune-teller. Like Paul, he is portrayed more as a moral complex and troubled figure who is not necessarily a villain.

However, his ability, too, leads to humanity's downfall as the masses who follow him gradually surrender their free will and become obsessed with the illusion of certainty he provides. The World Jones Made also dabbles with a story beat that introduces an alien species called the Drifters. Surprisingly, as reports suggest, Netflix will be dropping this storyline altogether while keeping the show's narrative grounded on Earth.

While this change to the source material raises some skepticism surrounding the upcoming series, it is still hard not to hope that it will turn out to be a worthy adaptation. And if all goes well for Netflix's The Future is Ours, it could even be considered a worthy follow-up to the Dune franchise. Will The Dune Franchise Continue After Dune: Part Three? Denis Villeneuve has directed a long line of incredible movies from myriad genres.

The Dune movies are only a small part of his film-making legacy. After Dune: Part Three, the director will reportedly move on to the James Bond universe and helm the next movie in the iconic spy franchise.

Interestingly, though, even though Villeneuve will end his run with the Dune franchise after the third movie, he has confirmed that he is happy to let another creative force take over the reins for anything that comes next. The original Frank Herbert books tell many more stories beyond Dune: Messiah in novels like Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune.

Dune: Part Three will also sow the seeds for these potential future installments by introducing Paul Atreides & Chani's twin children. The director has called the remaining books"beautiful" and even hinted at setting them up in the upcoming Dune movie .

“I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in ‘Messiah,’ there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door.

I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else. ” Considering the Dune movies' critical and commercial success, it seems likely that, after Villeneuve, other creative forces could step up to continue the franchise. For now, though, the movie franchise's future remains uncertain after Dune: Part Three. Owing to this, after the upcoming film, viewers can fill the void the franchise will leave behind by watching Netflix's take on Philip K. Dick's The World Jones Made.
