The Mandalorian and Grogu: A Monumental Occasion in the Star Wars Franchise
Star WarsThe MandalorianGrogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, is the first movie in the Disney era and follows the title characters as they embark on a mission to eliminate Imperial war criminals in the aftermath of the Empire's fall. Analysts predict a strong box office opening with a potential intake of $80 million for the holiday weekend.

The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters this week, a monumental occasion as the first Star Wars movie in nearly seven years. The new Jon Favreau-directed film follows the title characters as they hunt Imperial war criminals who remain hidden and scattered across the galaxy.

At the time of writing, the film currently sports a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking above the last Star Wars film , but below the rest of the theatrically released titles in the franchise released in the Disney era. Reviews were a big questionable mark surrounding The Mandalorian and Grogu in the weeks before its release, as well as potential box office intake.

Analysts predict that The Mandalorian and Grogu will rake in $80 million across the holiday weekend in the United States, in par with Solo: A Star Wars Story, the other recent film in the franchise to release in May. However, Solo had a significantly higher budget than The Mandalorian and Grogu. The cast of the film may help the box office of The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The film stars Pedro Pascal, who remains one of the biggest actors on the planet after his roles in The Mandalorian show, The Last of Us, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. New additions like Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White, who round out the major cast, also have the potential to draw new audiences to the box office. Pedro Pascal As Din Djarin/The Mandalorian Character: Pedro Pascal leads The Mandalorian and Grogu as one of the title characters.

He’s been a mainstay in the franchise ever since The Mandalorian season one, where he was cast as the bounty hunter who, at that point, didn’t even have a name yet. Since then, the character has grown into someone much more than a bounty hunter, just as Pascal has grown in stature as an actor. Pascal, however, isn’t always in the Mando suit.

There are body doubles and stunt performers who portray Din Djarin for the majority of the film, as was the case in the show as well. However, as revealed in the trailers, Pascal does get a chance to shine with his helmet off in the new story. Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Pascal is best known for being the Mandalorian in Star Wars, as well as leading roles in The Last of Us and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Brendan Wayne And Lateef Crowder As Din Djarin/The Mandalorian Character: The other two actors to play Din Djarin/The Mandalorian are Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder. Together, they portray the character in the vast majority of the new film, and responsibilities are divided depending on the needs of the specific scene being filmed.

For example, Crowder takes on all the action sequences, whereas Wayne puts on the helmet in talking scenes. Wayne and Crowder fully get their plaudits in the new film. In the first two seasons of the TV series, neither appeared in the main credits, but in season three and the new movie, the duo’s names are both front and center.

It’s a well-deserved placement that highlights the incredible work the two do to make the Mandalorian as successful and popular of a character as he is. Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Lateef Crowder has appeared in titles like The Protector, Tekken, and The Mandalorian, while Brendan Wayne is best known for portraying the title character in The Mandalorian and has also worked on Cowboys & Aliens and Agents of S.H. I.E.L.

D.. Jeremy Allen White As Rotta The Hutt Character: As stated, Jeremy Allen White is one of the newcomers in The Mandalorian and Grogu. He plays Rotta the Hutt, son of gangster Jabba the Hutt.

However, Rotta is very different from his father, showing a warm and gentle side that his dad never had. White lends his voice only for this character, who is brought to life via CGI. Director Jon Favreau shared that he cast White because of their shared connection of playing chefs. White stars in the hit Hulu series The Bear, whereas Favreau wrote, directed, and starred in the 2014 film Chef.

Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Jeremy Allen White is best known for his role as Carmy Berzatto in The Bear, and has also appeared in Shameless. Sigourney Weaver As Colonel Ward Character: Sigourney Weaver plays Mando’s main point of contact in the New Republic. She is the leader of the Adelphi base, where Din and Grogu primarily work out, and gives Mando the assignment to hunt down Imperial Commander Coyne, which kicks off the story of the new film.

Weaver’s character is not only a General, but an X-wing pilot as well, as she’s seen in the cockpit of the iconic Star Wars ships in recent promotional material. Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Sigourney Weaver is known for her starring roles in the Alien franchise, along with Ghostbusters, Avatar, and Gorillas in the Mist. Jonny Coyne As Janu Coyne Character: English actor Jonny Coyne plays Janu Coyne in The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The character's name is based off of the actor’s name in real life, as Jon Favreau and co. have essentially taken Coyne’s name and added a Star Wars twist to it. Coyne is an Imperial war criminal who has been a fugitive ever since the Empire fell, and who Mando goes after when given the mission by Colonel Ward.

Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Coyne is known for his appearances in Alcatraz, The Blacklist, Turn: Washington's Spies, and Gangster Squad. Martin Scorsese As Hugo Durant Character: Arguably the most intriguing name on this list, Martin Scorsese joins a galaxy far, far away as Hugo Durant, a local food truck operator on the moon of Shakari. The character, who is made with CGI, resembles Scorsese’s real-life looks, with fluffy eyebrows and expressive eyes.

Durant is the character who Mando goes to for information upon arriving on the moon, and Durant is extremely hesitant to give him any advice out of fear that Lord Janu will find out. Interestingly, Scorsese’s character also has an interesting connection to another member of the species.

The character Rio Durant, who was played by Jon Favreau in Solo: A Star Wars Story, is related to Hugo Durant in some way, although how the two are connected family wise remains unclear. Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Martin Scorsese is known for directing films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese has also acted in a number of films as well.

Steve Blum - Zeb Orrelios Character: Zeb Orrelios returns to the Star Wars franchise with a sizable role in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The hero, who first appeared in the animated television series Star Wars Rebels, is seen fighting alongside Mando and Grogu on their missions for the New Republic in the new film.

Zeb’s inclusion is another way that the story connects back to the broader galaxy at this time, as he is close with Ahsoka, Ezra, Hera, and the rest of the Ghost crew, all of whom play important roles in the galaxy during this era.

Actor’s Notable Movies & TV Shows: Steve Blum is known for voicing characters in Cowboy Bebop, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Star Wars Rebels, and Wolverine and the X-Men. 9.0/10 7/10 The Mandalorian and Grogu 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Sci-Fi Adventure Action Release Date May 22, 2026 Runtime 132 Minutes Director Jon Favreau Writers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Noah Kloor Producers Ian Bryce, Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy Cast See All Prequel The Mandalorian Sequel Dave Filoni's Untitled Mandalorian Movie Franchise Star Wars Powered by Expand Collapse
