A Mischief of Magpies is a three-issue comic book series written by Si Spurrier and illustrated by Matías Bergara. It delves into a world filled with talking birds, monsters, and the emotional struggles of adolescence, making it a unique and captivating read.

Si Spurrier and Matías Bergara, the masterminds behind books such as Coda, have returned with what just might be their magnum opus: A Mischief of Magpies, from DSTLRY.

This uniquely-told story sends readers on a mind-bending journey into a world of talking birds and terrifying monsters. Running parallel to the fantastic elements is a potent coming-of-age story that will resonate with readers of any age. Spurrier and Bergara have amassed accolades from across the industry for thought-provoking and challenging books. Spurrier came to American comics in the 2000s, after having worked extensively for British publications such as 2000 AD.

He has written several titles for Marvel’s X-Men line, as well as The Flash for DC Comics. Bergara, who has collaborated with Spurrier on not only Coda but also Step by Bloody Step for Image Comics, broke into the industry in Brazil, and has worked on titles such as Sons of Anarchy and American Vampire: Second Cycle.

Both Spurrier and Bergara’s careers are riding high at the moment, mixing creator-owned books with fresh and intelligent takes on existing characters and IPs. Both Spurrier and Bergara’s careers are riding high at the moment, mixing creator-owned books with fresh and intelligent takes on existing characters and IPs. This makes it the perfect time to unveil A Mischief of Magpies. The book is cerebral, appealing to the intellect, while never losing sight of its emotional core.

Simply put, readers will be hard-pressed to find as unique a comic in 2026 as A Mischief of Magpies. Nearly Everyone Will Be Able to Relate to A Mischief of Magpies The three issue A Mischief of Magpies introduces readers to Marinus. A bright and sensitive young man, Marinus discovers early in his life that he can move between two vastly different worlds.

At first, Marinus seemingly cannot control when he switches realms, yet masters this ability as he gets older. Marinus finds The Wandering City, a far more colorful alternative to the life he leads on Earth. As A Mischief of Magpies continues to unfold, Spurrier and Bergara give readers an intense, first-hand look at the storms of adolescence. As Marinus grows into his teenage years, he experiences loss when a family member passes away, and must contend with bullies at school.

While not everyone can move between worlds, many can still relate to the whirlwind of emotions and life experiences Marinus feels and sees throughout the book. Si Spurrier and Matías Bergara Are Cooking With Gas On A Mischief of Magpies The Book's Mixture of Styles Makes it a Unique Read A Mischief of Magpies is another jewel in the crowns of Spurrier and Bergara.

The two have tapped a vein that has already yielded gold, be it the fantasy series Coda or the wordless Step by Bloody Step. Speaking with ScreenRant about their collaborative spirit, Spurrier had this to say: When we came to do our third book it wasn’t just a case of “I’ve got an idea,” it was also a question.

“What experiments do we want to conduct, and what stories would let us conduct them? Likewise, Bergara told ScreenRant: In the case of this particular book we had a much more intense back-and-forward process of decisions and design because of the nature of the type of experimental narrative we chose for the story. We're mixing narration, panels, text, collage, etc - so we can't just rely on our typical method of"Si-writes-first-and-then-I-draw and off it goes to lettering.

" Beyond Spurrier and Bergara, A Mischief of Magpies features a tour-de-force job from letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. His lettering work, always a step ahead of his peers, shines in this title. What truly distinguishes A Mischief of Magpies is its mixture of narrative styles. When Marinus is in the “real world,” the book is largely text, consisting of diaries and journals, with Bergara’s art providing brief glimpses into the boy’s life.

When Marinus travels to The Wandering City, however, A Mischief of Magpies switches gears and becomes a more traditional comic book in its presentation. Spurrier and Bergara push the envelope on every project they tackle, and Magpies are no different. Spurrier told ScreenRant: Yeah, precisely. I like to think we make books that would otherwise be mpossible for anyone who wasn’t a writer/artist doing it all solo.

Here we’ve dialled that up even further, so it’s not just Matías and me working as a unit; it’s every other part of the team too. This deft blending of the real and the fantastic keeps the book fresh. Yet appealing to the brain can only get one so far, and A Mischief of Magpies excels in tugging at the heart strings as well. Marinus is a smart kid, but awkward.

He does not have the best home life, and is picked on at school. These adolescent struggles have played out in numerous books and films, but A Mischief of Magpies gives them a fantasy edge. And beware: the book’s intense emotional climax will leave some misty-eyed.

A Mischief of Magpies is Sure To Be Nominated for Industry Awards A Mischief of Magpies is Also a Win for DSTLRY, Spurrier and Bergara DSTLRY has been on a roll lately, publishing some of the best creator-owned work on the American comics' scene. When asked about why he and Spurrier took A Mischief of Magpies to DSTLRY, Bergara had this to say: DSTLRY has been putting out excellent titles from creators we admire, all 100% new, creator-owned titles -which is something we consider to be the best way of doing comics- and also in a special kind of"wide" format sizing that benefits certain traits of cinematic-like narration in comics.

Spurrier echoed Bergara’s sentiments about the publisher, stating: 100%, yeah. I’ll also add that I find myself increasingly drawn to publishers which make a virtue of valuing their creators. The results speak for themselves, as A Mischief of Magpies is one of the best reads of 2026. A Mischief of Magpies is another triumph, not only for Spurrier and Bergara, but for DSTLRY as well.

The book is a satisfying experience from start to finish, and rewards multiple readings. Spurrier and Bergara have crafted a modern masterpiece with A Mischief of Magpies, and enterprising readers are advised not to sleep on this book.
