Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni discuss the departure from tradition in The Mandalorian and Grogu, spotlighting the exclusive use of the Star Wars opening crawl in the Skywalker saga and other saga-type films.
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni explain why The Mandalorian and Grogu does not follow a classic Star Wars tradition. Certain elements in Star Wars movies have become iconic, including the opening crawl accompanied by John Williams ' musical score, at least one character saying, "I have a bad feeling about this," the sound of the Wilhelm scream, and Anthony Daniels having a role.
As the franchise's films expand beyond the Skywalker saga, some of these traditional elements have been retired or subverted instead of continuing to be a staple. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly for their Debunked video series, Jon Favreau explains that The Mandalorian and Grogu has opening text rather than an opening crawl because "We've only seen the crawl in the Skywalker saga films. Solo did not have a crawl. Rogue One did not have a crawl.
" Filoni noted that some of the other movies and Star Wars shows on Disney+ also have "a blurb that explains some context. " He added that "Ahsoka has a version of a crawl, but we put it in red, and it's strictly vertical. It doesn't go back. So we find different ways to do it.
" Beyond providing context, Filoni likes how the opening text taps into the franchise's "serial vibe. " At the same time, "the classic Star Wars crawl is something that we try to reserve only for saga-type films. " Favreau's vivid childhood memory of seeing the yellow text crawling up the screen also reinforces his belief that it should now be used sparingly:"Such an iconic opening. So that's why we don't use the crawl for everything in Star Wars.
There's so much Star Wars now, so Dave has explained, we save it for the saga.
" The Mandalorian and Grogu's opening text provides a little background about the Imperial Remnant and how Din Djarin and Grogu are working to stop them. Rogue One did not have any text at the beginning, but Solo did, and used it to explain the importance of the galaxy's criminal underworld in its story. On Disney+, along with Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew provided some opening text about piracy during the New Republic's reign.
The next Star Wars movie is Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, which has a theatrical release date of May 28, 2027. As another standalone movie, it presumably will not have the opening crawl either. It is unclear if Episode X will ever be made, although Simon Kinberg is developing a trilogy that has the potential to be the next "saga-type films" that has the traditional opening crawl at the beginning.
Even though The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place after three seasons of The Mandalorian series and their appearances in multiple episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, the new movie is designed as a self-contained story that is accessible to everyone, regardless of how much Star Wars they have seen before. The opening text only provides the most minimal context before dropping viewers into the middle of Din and Grogu on a mission to stop an Imperial warlord and his troops, which is very much in the spirit of the "serial vibe" mentioned by Filoni.
The Mandalorian and Grogu was directed by Favreau, who co-wrote the script with Filoni and Noah Kloor. Favreau and Filoni were also executive producers on the film, and the latter is now the co-president of Lucasfilm alongside Lynwen Brennan after Kathleen Kennedy's retirement. While it is unconfirmed how Din and Grogu's story will continue after their movie, the next live-action chapter in the New Republic era of Star Wars is Ahsoka season 2.
It wrapped filming last year and will debut on Disney+ in early 2027, with the red opening text potentially reappearing as well. 5.7/10 7/10 The Mandalorian and Grogu 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Sci-Fi Adventure Action Release Date May 22, 2026 Runtime 132 Minutes Director Jon Favreau Writers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Noah Kloor Producers Ian Bryce, Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy Cast See All Prequel The Mandalorian Sequel Dave Filoni's Untitled Mandalorian Movie Franchise Star Wars Powered by Expand Collapse
