Shark PowerDetect Speed Falls Short of Original Despite Sleeker Design

A side‑by‑side review of Shark's PowerDetect Speed and the original PowerDetect cordless vacuum reveals that the slimmer, LED‑highlighting model trades core cleaning performance for style and ease of use. While the Speed's design is more portable and its automatic LED makes spotting dirt easier, the original model still pulls more dust out of carpets and rugs thanks to a dual‑roller brush system. For serious rug cleaning or heavy‑duty use, the older PowerDetect remains the better choice, and the Dyson V15 Detect offers superior power and laser‑based debris detection if you need top‑tier performance.

The newest entry in Shark's PowerDetect line, the PowerDetect Speed, promises a slimmer, more maneuverable vacuum that delivers faster response to surface changes and dust levels.

The design changes are meant to make the unit easier to handle and more comfortable to use - a lightweight body, an automatic blue LED that illuminates hard‑floor debris, and a simplified self‑emptying dock that eliminates the extra air‑freshener cartridge found in the original model. Shark markets these improvements as making the Speed "nicer to use," but the core cleaning performance suffers compared to the earlier PowerDetect.

When I tested the Speed and the original PowerDetect over the same living‑room rug and hardwood surface, the results were clear. After a full vacuuming cycle of the rug with the Speed, the second pass still collected a noticeable amount of dust. The original version, which uses a dedicated fluffy roller for hardwood and a separate dual‑bristle set for rugs, collected more dust in that second pass.

The Speed's single‑roller brush works on both surfaces but does not provide the same suction force on heavy‑dirt carpeted areas as the original's dual‑roller design. The automatic LED on the Speed is a welcome visual cue: the blue light turns on as the unit detects a hard‑floor surface and points collectors to what needs cleaning, a function that mirrors Dyson's green laser in the V15 Detect.

However, the Speed's LED is less useful than Dyson's laser because it only highlights above‑threshold debris and not fine dust. The dock's slimmer profile and lack of a freshener cartridge is a convenience for people who never use the cartridge, but the manual switch to silence the unit while sleeping or on a call can feel clunky. Cleaning the bagless dust reservoir on the Speed also becomes a more noticeable chore.

While the Pressure‑assisted Dust Bag is emptied after about six weeks, the single dust plume that can result each time the vacuum is tipped up can be harder to manage than the small, more frequent plumes common with the original PowerDetect. Ultimately, the Speed works well for users who mainly clean hard floors and value the ease of a one‑less‑system. For deep carpet cleaning or heavier vacuum demand, the original PowerDetect still provides superior performance.

If you're comparing Shark to other high‑rated cordless vacuums, Dyson's V15 Detect offers the ability to manually switch between hard‑floor and soft‑floor cleaning heads with more effective suction and the green laser that shines a light on debris better than Shark's blue LED. Until a new Shark model is released, the original PowerDetect remains the best option for anyone prioritising heavy‑duty cleaning, while the Speed can serve as a lightweight, easy‑to‑carry alternative for hard‑floor enthusiasts.
