Could what you eat determine how well you sleep?
Frontiers in NutritionThey looked at how many fruits and vegetables people ate in a day and how much they slept at night. Keep in mind the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests we get at least seven hours to reduce the risk of a number of health problems, including type two diabetes.
"A lot of the hormones that are regulated during our sleep cycle that when in the absence of that sleep cycle or at least duration of sleep, we believe that it impairs proper glucose metabolism and ultimately could pre-dispose you to type two diabetes," says Dr. Bradley Jackson, Medical Director at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio Medicaid. Sure enough, researchers discovered people who got two to four servings of fruits and vegetables a day were more likely to get the recommended amount of sleep than those who didn't eat this amount.Doctor Jackson says sleep is so important, it should be on our list of things to monitor for good health. "One of the things that should be an important question, particularly for providers out there, is looking at an individual's history is looking at their sleep cycles, looking at how much sleep they are getting." As for which fruits and vegetables might be good for snoozing, it appears green leafy veggies, tomatoes and cucumbers were common in those who got adequate amounts of sleep. As to why, it could be that fruit and veggie eaters have better health habits overall which lead to better sleep.
