The middling reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu have accused it of just stacking three or four episodes of the TV show on top of each other and calling it a movie. However, one thing you can’t accuse it of is lacking in action. Jon Favreau designed this movie as an action delivery system, with every couple of minutes finding Mando in a fresh shootout or high-speed chase, fighting for his life and we get to sit back, munch on our popcorn, and enjoy the show. The Mandalorian and Grogu is basically a two-hour compilation of action sequences, but some of them are better than others.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and Grogu. The middling reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu have accused it of many things. It’s been accused of just stacking three or four episodes of the TV show on top of each other and calling it a movie.
It’s been accused of telling a story with no real weight or stakes, that plays it safe and maintains the status quo. But one thing you can’t accuse it of is lacking in action. Jon Favreau designed this movie as an action delivery system. Every couple of minutes, Mando finds himself in a fresh shootout or high-speed chase, fighting for his life, and we get to sit back, munch on our popcorn, and enjoy the show.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is basically a two-hour compilation of action sequences, but some of them are better than others. 10 Rotta's First Match The weakest action scene in the movie isn’t bad by any means; it’s just less memorable than the rest. We’re first introduced to a now-swole Rotta the Hutt as he takes on a bulky human gladiator in the fighting pit.
It plays like a family-friendly version of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator movies, and it only serves to introduce Rotta’s champion status. This scene does end with a fun sight gag when Rotta wins the fight by squishing the guy. 9 Mando Fights Lord Janu's Goons When Mando arrives at the salt bar to question Lord Janu, he’s stopped at the door by a horned enforcer, who proceeds to set the goon squad on him.
This scene is brought to life with kinetic camerawork and solid fight choreography, and it’s interesting to see Mando hold back in hand-to-hand combat. He’s usually out for blood like John Wick, but he’s not trying to kill these guys.
He just wants to subdue them long enough to speak to their boss, so he pulls his punches and lets his fists do the talking. 8 A Poisoned Mando Covers Grogu's Escape When Grogu’s little engineer friends get Mando back to their tiny ship, it’s clear he won’t fit aboard. So, he encourages the li’l critters to leave without him, and stays behind to cover their escape.
Mando charges through the forest, gunning down droids left and right. The action itself is pretty pedestrian, but the whole setup of this scene is an emotional gut-punch. It really feels like Mando might not make it out alive this time . 7 Mando & Grogu Chase Rotta Across The City After Mando and Rotta escape from the fighting pit, Rotta tries to flee.
He slides into a floating car and takes off down the street. Grogu takes chase in a floating stroller, and Mando is close behind on his jetpack. The chase itself would’ve been fun enough, but there are monsters running rampant on the streets. The setting is gorgeous, too; the neon-soaked metropolis is reminiscent of Blade Runner. 6 The Final Battle The Mandalorian and Grogu’s climactic set-piece is basically an episode-long battle scene.
It’s lots of fun, but it’s pretty exhausting. It has the same problem as the final battle of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum: it goes on for a really long time, one fight after another, one explosion after another, and it’s just too much. At least in Parabellum, it all built to John Wick getting shot off the roof of a skyscraper and tumbling into an alleyway.
In The Mandalorian and Grogu’s final battle, there’s the pretense of high stakes — a race against time as the New Republic bombers approach, a dead end on the way out, a big drop into the moat below — but in the end, nothing consequential happens, so it’s all just empty spectacle.
Still, it’s jam-packed with really cool moments: Mando’s Dune 2-style knife fight with the bounty hunter, Grogu saving Rotta with the Force, the tiny engineers coming back with the cavalry. 5 A Bounty Hunter Arrives On Mando's Homestead Midway through the movie, in the dead of night, a bounty hunter and his ravenous wolf arrive at the Mandalorian’s homestead to capture him and bring him back to the Hutts. The actual action isn’t particularly exciting — I don’t know why Mando thought the most effective way to thwart this bounty hunter would be to blow a hole in his own roof — but it’s one of the most visually stunning sequences in the film.
For the most part, The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t really justify its leap to cinemas. But this whole sequence with the bounty hunter arriving on the homestead on a rainy night, under the cover of thunder and lightning, looked incredible on the big screen. It looks like a Kurosawa samurai movie . 4 Mando Fights The Dragonsnake Like the final battle, Mando’s fight with the Dragonsnake goes on a bit too long.
Between his initial duel with the babies and the final boss battle, that sequence really starts to drag. You’re in that watery hellhole for so long, you can feel yourself pruning up. Still, it’s a really cool setup, similar to Luke Skywalker’s standoff with the rancor, but with the added danger of murky, bottomless water.
Plus, Mando’s helmet is off for almost the entirety of this sequence , so you really get to see the emotion in Mando’s eyes: the fear, the anger, the determination to survive. Pascal earns his top billing with this one scene alone. 3 Mando & Zeb Capture Commander Coin When Mando and Zeb break into Commander Coin’s estate to arrest him, the sequence starts off with the usual pew-pew hallway shootouts.
It feels like a saloon brawl from a classic western, bolstered with old-school gangster movie tropes like a guy with a machine gun spraying bullets at a table the protagonist is hiding under. It’s all very typical stuff to begin with — it even has Mando’s catchphrase, “I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold” — but this sequence really picks up when they drive Coin back to the Razor Crest, with his legions of Stormtroopers hot on their tail.
The thrill of this high-speed chase is hilariously juxtaposed with a comedic back-and-forth between Mando and Grogu. Mando is trying to talk Grogu through the take-off process, and Grogu is just firing off all the missiles for fun. 2 The Opening AT-AT Chase The Mandalorian and Grogu gets off to a riveting start and delivers one of its best action set-pieces right off the bat.
The opening scene establishes Mando’s new side gig — chasing Imperial fugitives for the New Republic — in the most exciting way possible. Mando chases one of those fugitives down the side of a mountain, runs afoul of a fleet of AT-AT walkers, and ends up shooting his bounty out of the sky.
Every shot of Mando jetpacking away from an exploding AT-AT is cooler than the last, and the action builds to a natural crescendo when the bad guy gets away on an escape pod and leaves behind a litter of bombs. Grogu frantically tapping on Mando’s helmet is the first of many great sight gags in the movie , and Zeb from Rebels arriving to collect them was a pleasant surprise. 1 Mando & Rotta's Dejarik Match The best action sequence in the movie, bar none, is when Mando and Rotta are foisted into a Dejarik match.
This real-life extrapolation of the holographic chess game featured for several seconds in the original Star Wars movie is the grandest, most elaborate Easter egg in the whole film. But even if you don’t get the reference, this is the highlight of the movie . The stakes just keep getting raised.
Mando is pitted against Rotta in a fight to the death, then when he figures out a loophole to free Rotta from his contract, the arena is flooded with the deadliest creatures in the galaxy. The Mandalorian and Grogu has a lot of great action sequences, but this is the best of the bunch.
