Boston Blue season 2 confirmed; Donnie Wahlberg reprises role after 13 seasons of Blue Bloods

After a successful first season, CBS confirmed season 2 of Boston Blue, renewing it quickly after just six episodes had aired on Friday nights. Danny Reagan, Donnie Wahlberg’s character, rushed to Boston when his son Sean was injured in a fire, sticking around with new partner Lena Silver.

Members of Blue Bloods' Reagan family returned to primetime with a new show in 2025, and the guarantee of Boston Blue season 2 proves that CBS didn't need the whole original cast back to make a spinoff work.

Donnie Wahlberg reprised his role as Danny Reagan after 13 seasons of Blue Bloods, and relocating to Boston meant that Danny would be surrounded almost entirely by new characters. Once CBS gave Boston Blue the time slot that used to belong to Blue Bloods, the network had a recipe for success. The biggest question going into Boston Blue concerned what could possibly draw Danny Reagan out of New York City after more than a decade of Blue Bloods.

The new show figured out the answer early on. Danny rushed to Boston when his son Sean, who was working with the police department there, was injured in a fire. Danny ended up sticking around with new partner Lena Silver, played by Star Trek: Discovery alum Sonequa Martin-Green. The Silver family dinners replaced the Reagan family dinners, and all was well despite Tom Selleck's comments about the Blue Bloods spinoff.

There were big changes from Blue Bloods that risked driving returning fans away, but the Boston Blue premise was fresh enough that new viewers could tune in without needing to know all the lore about the Reagan family. The result was a hit show, and while it's much too early to predict a Boston Blue run that's as successful as the original series, the future is bright for Danny, Lena, and the rest.

Boston Blue Season 2 Has Already Been Confirmed By CBS The network didn't leave fans of the new series hanging for long about its future in primetime. Back in December, CBS renewed Boston Blue for season 2 after just six episodes had aired on Friday nights.

A renewal wasn't a surprise when the drama became the No. 1 new broadcast show of the 2025-2026 TV season, but even the most optimistic viewers likely didn't expect such an early guarantee for season 2. Sheriff Country was also quickly renewed for a second season, although CBS took its time in renewing Fire Country for season 5 to fill out the Friday lineup.

In fact, Boston Blue was such an immediate hit for the network that the pilot helped CBS beat all the other broadcast network competition during premiere week in October. Boston Blue earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics when it debuted, which outranked Blue Bloods on Rotten Tomatoes. Whatever doubts there were about Boston Blue having a long future despite leaving most of the Reagans behind, the early success proved that Donnie Wahlberg made a good choice to continue playing Danny. When Will Boston Blue Season 2 Release? Boston Blue has not yet received a premiere date for CBS' complete 2026 schedule, and the wait for news may last well into the summer hiatus.

That said, the network has confirmed that fans can expect Boston Blue back in the fall, and it's holding on to the time slot that worked so well for season 1. Boston Blue will continue airing at 10 p.m. on Fridays, directly after Fire Country at 9 p.m., and Sheriff Country at 8 p.m. If CBS sticks with the same premiere window for this fall, season 2 will likely arrive in mid-October.

That doesn't mean Boston Blue will follow Fire Country all season, however. Fire Country is getting a shortened fifth season of just 13 episodes, which seems like a mind-boggling choice for CBS' Friday night lineup that had been so solid in the 2025-2026 TV schedule.

At the time of writing, the network hasn't announced what will replace Fire Country ahead of Boston Blue after Max Thieriot's drama wraps its shortened season, but a potential medical drama set in Fire Country's TV universe is a contender. What Boston Blue Season 2's Story Could Be Like Blue Bloods before it, Boston Blue is a police procedural drama, so it can be difficult to predict what comes next.

There have been some serialized storylines, however, including the Silver family pursuing justice for the murder of one of their own. Sean's injury plotline was actually wrapped up fairly quickly, with Danny just sticking around to solve cases with Lena even after his son was on the mend. Now that Danny is officially part of BPD, it's possible that Boston Blue will be more procedural than ever in season 2.

Related 10 Best Characters In Blue Bloods Blue Bloods has had many characters come and go over the past fourteen years, but there are 10 that stand out far more than the others. Posts 1 By Jack Ori It does seem likely that more Blue Bloods characters will reunite with Donnie Wahlberg on the spinoff.

The first season features Marisa Ramiez for a handful of episodes as Maria Baez, which fit with Baez and Danny starting a relationship at the end of the original series. Other Blue Bloods veterans who have already appeared on Boston Blue include Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan, Lou Cariou as Henry Reagan, and Will Hochman as Joe Hill. Tom Selleck's return as Frank Reagan is uncertain.

Sean Reagan returned as well, although Boston Blue recast the Blue Bloods actor for the spinoff. Only time will tell if the full cast of Boston Blue's first season will return. Blue Bloods managed to hold on to many of its stars from start to finish, but that doesn't guarantee the same will be true for Donnie Wahlberg's spinoff. 38 8.6/10 Boston Blue 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Crime Drama Release Date October 17, 2025 Network CBS Directors Alex Zakrzewski, Anthony Hemingway, Antonio Negret, Randall Zisk, Jackeline Tejada Writers Terri Kopp, Pam Veasey, Rebecca Perry Cutter, Brandon Margolis, Brandon Sonnier Cast See All Creator Brandon Margolis, Brandon Sonnier Powered by Expand Collapse
