Dothan police said they’re trying to learn why they didn’t hear about Dunaway’s alleged behavior until this month.
DOTHAN, Ala. - Police jailed a Jerry Lee Faine Elementary teacher on seven felony charges, and records show allegations tied to him may stretch back decades.
Johnny Mark Dunaway, a Dothan Public Schools math coach, was charged this week with enticing and sexually abusing a child.
“We signed it to the school, and they did nothing about it. This happened two years ago. And it’s still continuing right now until today,” Gaskins said. Records show allegations against Dunaway go back 30 years.
A report from Florida accuses him of rubbing against young students and lying with a student. The report shows school officials disciplined Dunaway, but he kept his Florida certification and faced no criminal charges. After Dunaway’s arrest Wednesday, current school leaders blamed previous leadership for hiring Dunaway in Dothan. But retired Superintendent Dr. Dennis Coe said his background check was spotless.
Coe said if current administrators and board members had concerns, they could have cut ties before last school year started. Dothan police said they’re trying to learn why they didn’t hear about Dunaway’s alleged behavior until this month.
“Just being a parent, it raises my concerns because now I have to start looking at my kids like, hey, are you—is anything going on in your school? ” said Dejhia Armstrong, a Dothan City Schools parent.
