Forest’s form has dipped a great deal from last season to this but they’ve also had Europa League campaign to manage. With no Europe to think about next season, they’ll be targeting at least a top-half finish. 13:37What Aston Villa's Europa League triumph means in the race for European football By Harry BamforthI told you an explainer was coming.
After Aston Villa triumphed in the Europa League on Wednesday, it meant that the dynamic of the battle for Europe changed... rather dramatically. Unai Emery's side have already qualified for Europe's premier competition organically via the league, after taking Liverpool to the cleaners five days prior to their historic victory at the Tupras Stadium. Villa currently sit fourth and are three points better off than Liverpool going into the final day on Sunday.
However, their goal difference is four goals worse than the Reds', which means they could still feasibly finish fifth in the table. If they lose to Manchester City at the Etihad in their last game, and Arne Slot's side get past European-chasing Brentford, then the team that finishes sixth in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League.
This would mean that Bournemouth, who are currently sixth place and three points behind Liverpool, or Brighton, who are a further three points back behind the Cherries, could make their bow in club football's most prestigious competition, depending on results. If Villa lost, Liverpool won, and Bournemouth beat Nottingham Forest on the final day, then the south coast side will be hearing the Champions League anthem at the Vitality Stadium next season.
But in the same scenario, should they lose to Forest and Brighton turn over Manchester United, then it would be the Seagulls that take sixth spot and a place among Europe's elite. And that's just the Champions League places...
To find out more about how Europe could be decided, read below: What Villa's Europa League win means for European football raceBy dismantling Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul on Wednesday night, Villa have potentially opened the door to the possibility of a sixth Premier League side qualifying for the Champions League. 13:32Battle for EuropeBy Harry BamforthNow this is going to take some explaining. The battle for Europe is still raging on, and it is far from being decided who finishes where.
All we know is that Aaton Villa has secured Champions League football, but even their result against Manchester City will have huge implications on everybody else around them. Liverpool, Bournemouth, and Brighton are still scrapping for that final Champions League spot, but if Villa lose and the Reds win, well, there may even be space for two of the teams. Brentford and Chelsea are still scrapping over both Europa League and Conference League positions, too.
Oh yeah, and Sunderland could still get Europe, too. I know, crazy. But being honest, they need a lot, and I mean A LOT to go their way. Don't worry, I know it's all confusing, so the next post will be the explainer on it all. 13:27The trophy has arrivedBy Harry BamforthWow.
Just look at that trophy, it's just gorgeous. There truly is nothing better than seeing the Premier League shining in the glorious sunshine; it's just so pretty. It has arrived at Selhurst Park and is on display ahead of Arsenal's final day clash with Crystal Palace. In less than four hours, Martin Odegaard will be lifting it. 13:2522-year wait is over By Harry BamforthThis is the day Arsenal fans have been waiting 22 years for.
Following their match with Crystal Palace today, no matter the scoreline, they will be crowned Premier League champions at long last. Mikel Arteta's bridesmaids are finally becoming the bride. The scenes on Tuesday when the league title was confirmed were mental. Thousands in the streets, around the stadium, cars honking their horns, and the squad even had a huge party.
Incredible. Now they get to party all over again in south London, and I'm telling you, it will be such a celebration. Cycling around east London this morning, I saw more Arsenal shirts than West Ham ones, which says a lot. They were everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE.
It really is a monumental day for the Gunners. 13:17Fight for survivalBy Harry BamforthHave we ever had a relegation scrap this big on the final day? Yes, I know there are only two teams involved, but those two teams are Tottenham and West Ham. They are both huge rivals, and massive clubs, too. For either to go down, it would be pretty mental.
I honestly never thought I would be reporting on the potential of Spurs being relegated, but here we are. It's actually kind of crazy that we are, but they do say no team is too big to go down. Tottenham lead the race, two points clear of West Ham, and only need a draw to secure their safety due to their largely superior goal difference. You'd think it would be a straightforward day for them.
But this is Tottenham, and this team is not built for a survival scrap. They could easily wet the bed today and lose at home to Everton, then all West Ham need to do is beat Leeds. It's going to be such a dramatic day in the capital. 13:11What's on the menu? By Harry BamforthFinal day fixtures: 13:06Final day frenzyBy Harry BamforthThe final day has come. 37 games.
Nine months of drama. Scraps at the top and bottom. And it all comes down to this. Final day madness.
The amount of storylines today is actually mental, like, we haven't had a final day like this in years. The title may have been decided in midweek, but we still have a relegation scrap, which is possibly the biggest we have seen in Premier League history in terms of the size of the clubs involved.
Then we have the battle for Europe, Pep Guardiola's final game in charge of Manchester City, Mohamed Salah's farewell at Liverpool, and Andoni Iraola is also leaving Bournemouth. It's fair to say, with all that is going on, you are sure to be entertained this afternoon. It is going to be non-stop drama, and I just know I'm going to be non-stop tapping away for the next seven hours. It's time to truly lock in.
So, get yourself a nice cold bevvie, pull up a pew in the glorious sunshine, and enjoy the show. Let the chaos commence. Key UpdatesTOP STORIES
