The young woman had recently celebrated her birthday and was planning to return to her family in Wales for a short visit in July. On the day of the crash she was driving ahead of her boyfriend, Cai James, when her vehicle left the road, struck a tree and caused a catastrophic brain injury.
Medical staff at Royal Perth Hospital said she appears to have suffered a seizure while at the wheel, which resulted in rapid blood loss and irreversible damage. Despite the rapid response of more than forty emergency personnel and the presence of her boyfriend and cousin at her side, Annie died on May 23. The couple, both in their early twenties, had traveled more than 9,000 miles from the United Kingdom to pursue a shared dream of travelling and working abroad.
They met on a friend's farm when Cai was operating a tractor and quickly fell in love, planning a future together that included growing old side by side. Their relationship was marked by a deep affection for the outdoors, a love of animals and a mutual desire to explore new horizons. On the morning of the accident the pair were out for lunch, each in separate cars, when Annie's vehicle suddenly swerved off the road.
Cai, who was only a few minutes behind her, stopped immediately and stayed at the scene, holding her hand as paramedics administered life‑saving care. The family was able to stay connected through a video call, which offered a small measure of comfort as they watched their daughter's final moments.
Annie's mother, Angharad, and her aunt, Tanya Davies, have flown to Australia to support Cai and to arrange for Annie's body to be returned to their home town of Llanybri in Carmarthenshire. Angharad has launched a fundraiser to cover the £35,000 cost of repatriation, and the appeal has already surpassed £31,000 thanks to an outpouring of support from friends, fellow travellers and the wider community.
In her tribute, the family described Annie as a "live wire" who overcame childhood leukaemia and a ruptured kidney, living each day with boundless energy, humour and kindness. Police are still seeking witnesses to the crash and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
