MILLBROOK, Ala. - “The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and his Friends” is the story of the story of Peter Rabbit. Yes, you read that right. It’s not just the tales of Peter Rabbit and friends, it’s the story of how Beatrix Potter came to write her beloved tales in the first place. The play is told from the perspective of Annie Carter-Moore, Beatrix’s childhood babysitter and life-long friend, who has stayed in contact with Beatrix via mail even after their lives went different directions. Beatrix Potter meets her new governess, Annie Carter-Moore .Beatrix’s journey as a storyteller begins when one of Annie’s many children falls ill with a fever. Beatrix, an intelligent woman and lifelong creative, decides to cheer up her friend’s sick son by writing a little story about naught a rabbit named Peter who gets into trouble with a human farmer. Peter Rabbit , Mother Rabbit , Mopsy , Cottontail , and Flopsy .All of Annie’s children are delighted by the story, asking their mother to read it again and again until they can nearly quote the whole thing. Hoping for more, another of Annie’s kids decides to fake sickness in order to ask Beatrix for another story. This prompts her to write her next piece, “The Tailor of Gloucester,” where a pack of mice save a tailor in need after his tricky cat nearly ruins his latest work. The Tailor and the mice The Tailor , The Mayor , and the Footman .Beatrix’s family isn’t so supportive of her creative endeavors, but she continues to write story after story, eventually deciding to self publish, ultimately catching the attention of a real publishing house in the process. This summertime special features a large cast of children in the community who have chosen to spend their summer in the theatre!
