The UK is experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 35C on May 10, 2021. The heatwave has caused train cancellations, affected the NHS, and led to increased breakdown callouts on the roads.
Today is the hottest May day on record, with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 35C. The Met Office confirmed the milestone after Heathrow and Kew Gardens provisionally reached 35.0C on Tuesday afternoon.
The temperature is roughly double the average for this time of year, following the hottest May day and night readings ever recorded in Britain. The UK Health Security Agency (HSA) has extended an amber health alert for much of the country into Thursday evening, warning that there could be deaths among the elderly and vulnerable.
Train companies have come under fire for cancelling services due to the 'severe weather', and millions packed onto sweltering Tubes, buses, and trains this morning following the record-breaking Bank Holiday weekend. Excessive heat can cause overhead power lines to sag and lines to buckle, and the railway network could be hampered by the 'unusually warm' temperatures.
Many newer power lines have 'auto-tension' systems that can pull cables back into place, but older routes are not equipped with these, forcing trains to slow down. SWR said trains running on its network may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes until the end of today, affecting services running from London Waterloo to parts of Surrey, Hampshire, and Dorset. Elizabeth Line services in the capital have also been slowed down due to 'high track temperatures'.
The heatwave is causing additional problems in the NHS, with more elderly patients with complex care needs coming to east London hospitals as they struggle to cope with the heat. The RAC said it had seen a 20 per cent increase in breakdown callouts, with a spike in engines overheating
