A 19-year-old Wisconsin man was charged with multiple felonies, including arson, on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to burn down the office of Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman. Caiden Stachowicz, of Menasha, told police he set the fire outside Grothman's Fond du Lac office around 1 a.m. Sunday because he was upset with the federal TikTok ban, claiming it violated his constitutional rights. Stachowicz admitted to purchasing gasoline and matches to start the fire.
He stated that he tried to break into the office to ignite the flames inside but was unable to shatter the window. Instead, he poured gasoline on an electrical box in the back of the building and around the front, ignited a match, and watched it burn. He expressed his desire for the entire building to be consumed by the flames. Stachowicz told police he had participated in peaceful protests in the past but no longer believed peace was an option. He stated his intention was to cause disruption and make a point by setting fire to the government building. According to the criminal complaint, Stachowicz indicated he wished the entire building would have burned down, although he denied wanting to harm anyone or Grothman personally. Stachowicz is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning. Judge Tricia Walker set a $500,000 cash bail and ordered him to have no contact with Grothman or his staff. He is also prohibited from possessing any dangerous weapons or fire-starting materials. Online court records did not list an attorney for Stachowicz. Grothman voted for a bill last April that mandated TikTok's China-based company, ByteDance, sell its U.S. operation by Sunday. TikTok briefly went dark late Saturday before coming back online hours later after then-President-elect Donald Trump said he would attempt to grant ByteDance more time to find a buyer. Trump signed an executive order Monday, instructing the U.S. attorney general not to enforce the ban for 75 days. Grothman's spokesperson, Noelle Young, stated that Grothman would contact The Associated Press directly
