Caiden Stachowicz, 19, was arrested after allegedly setting fire to the Fond du Lac office of U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman. The complaint states Stachowicz expressed anger over Grothman's vote on a bill mandating TikTok's sale.

A Wisconsin man has been charged with felony arson and other crimes after allegedly attempting to burn down the office of U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman . Caiden Stachowicz, 19, of Menasha, was arrested early Sunday morning after police responded to a fire outside Grothman's Fond du Lac office.

According to the criminal complaint, Stachowicz admitted to starting the fire because he was upset with Grothman's vote in support of a bill that mandated TikTok's China-based parent company, ByteDance, sell its U.S. operations. Stachowicz claimed he believed the shutdown violated his constitutional rights and that he no longer believed in peaceful protest. He stated he wanted to cause disruption and make a point by starting the fire at the government building. Stachowicz told police he had purchased gas and matches to start the fire at Grothman's office and attempted to break into the building to ignite the flames inside. When he couldn't break the window, he poured gas on an electrical box in the back of the building and around the front, lit a match, and watched it burn. He expressed his desire for the entire building to have been consumed by flames. Fortunately, firefighters and police were able to quickly extinguish the fire, limiting the damage. Stachowicz appeared in court Wednesday morning via video conference from jail. Judge Tricia Walker set a $500,000 cash bail and ordered him to have no contact with Grothman or his staff. He was also prohibited from possessing any dangerous weapons or fire-starting materials. Online court records did not list an attorney for Stachowicz. The congressman's spokesperson declined to comment beyond saying Grothman would call The Associated Press directly.
