A 19-year-old Wisconsin man faces serious charges after allegedly setting fire to the office of U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, claiming his actions were motivated by Grothman's vote in favor of TikTok's U.S. operations sale.
A Wisconsin man is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to burn down the office of U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman. Caiden Stachowicz, 19, was arrested early Sunday morning after police responded to a fire outside Grothman's Fond du Lac office. According to a criminal complaint, Stachowicz admitted to starting the fire because he was upset with Grothman's vote in favor of a bill that mandated TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sell its U.S. operations.
Stachowicz claimed he believed the shutdown violated his constitutional rights and that he had previously participated in peaceful protests but no longer felt they were an option. He stated that he wanted to cause disruption and make a point by setting the building ablaze. While he expressed that he didn't want to hurt anyone or harm Grothman personally, he did acknowledge his desire for the entire building to burn down. Stachowicz is charged with felony arson, making terrorist threats, attempted burglary, and property damage. He faces over 50 years in prison if convicted on all counts. A judge set his bail at $500,000 cash and ordered him to have no contact with Grothman or his staff, as well as to refrain from possessing any dangerous weapons or fire-starting materials. Grothman's spokesperson declined to comment beyond stating that the congressman would contact the Associated Press directly.
