Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.
ANCHORAGE , AK - While things are remaining fairly dry for the eastern half of the state, active weather out west will keep clouds and rain in the forecast. This comes as a fairly stationary area of low pressure in the Bering Sea, which keeps ongoing rain showers and gusty conditions across Western Alaska .
Rain showers from yesterday paved the way for some gorgeous sunshine yesterday evening. While some cloud cover has streamed back in across Southcentral, we will see a gradual return to sunshine throughout the day. While we can’t rule out a spot shower today, most locations will remain on the dry side. We’ll see many areas of Southcentral warming into the 60s and possibly some 70-degree readings through the Copper River Basin and Mat-Su. Recent weather across the state has led to a lowering of the preparedness level for fires across Alaska. The Level 4 preparedness was downgraded to a Level 3 on Wednesday, with the burn permits also being lifted for the Kenai, Kodiak and Mat-Su areas. More rain showers will be possible Friday into Saturday, with most of the activity impacting the Kenai, Prince William Sound and open waters of the Gulf of Alaska. However, some light showers could build north through the day, with any light rain for Anchorage and surrounding locations drying out by Saturday morning. Highs will generally stay near seasonal values to close out the week, with warmer weather heading our way next week.Although the ridge has shifted to the south for the panhandle, the weather pattern still favors warm conditions with little in the way of rain. While some spotty to isolated showers can’t be ruled out for northern parts of the panhandle today, many locations will continue to see dry weather. We’ll also hold onto daily cloud cover, with highs warming into the 60s. Looking into next week, it’s likely we’ll continue the dry stretch of weather, with highs returning back near, if not above 70 degrees.A nice day is on tap for the Interior for your Thursday, although some lingering showers will be possible near the Denali Borough. Outside of this slight chance for showers, we’ll see a mix of sun and clouds today, with most locations warming into the 70s. Thunderstorm development will be possible Friday into Saturday for areas of the Central and Eastern Interior, with ongoing rain chances carrying us into early next week. As of today, Sunday looks to be the warmest day, before highs knock back down into the low to mid 60s next week.A slow, but gradual cooling trend has been taking hold across the Slope the past few days, with gusty winds beginning to pick up. While winds won’t be strong, we will see gusts up to 30 mph moving back in for your Friday. The cooling trend will be short-lived, as temperatures look to soar once again into the weekend and through next week. It’s likely we could see some 70-degree readings return for areas north of the Brooks Range. More than an inch of rain has fallen in areas west of Tanana this week, with some of the heaviest amounts near the Seward Peninsula. These rains have been very beneficial in helping slow the spread of wildfire growth. While winds have died down, we’ll still see some gusts of 10 to 20 mph through the day, with the highest winds near Gambell/St. Lawrence. There is little change, as daily showers look to remain with Western and Southwest Alaska, as a stationary area of low pressure remains in the Western Bering Sea.A stalled out low-pressure with frontal systems will continue to impact the Aleutians. This will keep daily rain, winds and fog in the forecast for parts of the Aleutians, with a showery weather pattern to close out the week. Some of the heaviest rain looks to fall from St. Paul to the Central Aleutians and east. It’s possible some locations could see well over half an inch today, with more rain expected to close out the week. This pattern has the potential to remain with us into next week as well.Although there looks to be little movement in our trough out west, temperatures across the eastern half of the state will see a general trend towards warmer weather. This will most likely be for areas of the Gulf Coast region, as our ridge looks to build back north. This will easily lead to highs in Southcentral and Southeast, likely warming back into the 70s. As of today, only five days this year have warmed into the 70s.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
