Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.
ANCHORAGE , AK - Lingering thunderstorm activity west of the Alaska Range continues this morning, with lightning frequency having died down the last few hours. As these showers taper off, we’ll see additional thunderstorm development later today.
These storms will fire during the peak daytime heating, with a red flag warning going into effect for the Interior.A marine layer continues to grip areas of Southcentral nestled along Cook Inlet, with some sunshine expected later today. It will take some time for the marine layer to burn off, but the heat is on once the sun returns. Areas of the Copper River Basin, southern Kenai and through Prince William Sound are already seeing sunshine, with little in the way of cloud cover. While thunderstorm potential doesn’t look as promising as areas of the Interior, we’ll still want to watch for some thunderstorm development along the foothills of the Talkeetna Mountains. We’ll keep with this daily chance for showers and storms, with temperatures warming into the 70s for the official start of Summer. Expect warm weather to remain with us to close out the week, with signs of cooler weather and the return to showers possible next week.Lingering areas of light rain showers and winds will remain with Southeast today, as an area of low pressure remains in place across the Northern Pacific Ocean and Southern Gulf of Alaska. While showers don’t look to favor everyone, locations of the Southern Inner Channels will see the best shot of rain. As the rain tapers off by week’s end, a summer weather pattern builds into the region. We’ll see highs this week likely climbing into the 70s with some sunshine, with some drier weather to be expected. Next week will see temperatures nearly 10 degrees cooler in some spots, with showers returning later next week. While the heat advisory is no more in the Interior, it could still be hot for some sensitive groups. Hazy and smoky skies remain for the Interior, with additional thunderstorm development likely later today. A red flag warning will go into effect at 4 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, for Fairbanks and much of the Interior. Rapid ignition and growth of wildfires is to be expected today, with numerous lightning strikes likely. More than 15,000 lightning strikes were recorded yesterday in Alaska, with the potential that today could be an active day as well. Any thunderstorms that do fire have the potential to bring winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. Daily highs will remain in the 80s, with cooler weather dropping highs back in the 70s next week. Expect daily thunderstorm development to remain with us.Continued warmth along the Slope is leading to ice jams and flooding concerns. Most of the Slope remains under a flood watch through today, with a flood warning and flood advisory for a few rivers along the Slope. The flood warning for the Colville River remains in effect, as rapid snowmelt and recent ice jams have led to flooding. Additionally, the flood advisory for the Sagavanirktok River along the Dalton Highway remains in effect until Friday afternoon. Temperatures will continue to remain fairly warm, with 50s and 60s along the immediate coast, and 60s to 80s for areas of the Brooks Range. Remember if you come across any flooded roadways, particularly along the Dalton Highway, to turn around, don’t drown. Although quieter compared to the rest of the state, the west coast will still see some inland thunderstorm development. The best chance for thunderstorms will be from Galena to Mcgrath, with any storms bringing winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail. Temperatures continue to remain on the warm side, with coastal regions warming into the 40s and 50s, while inland areas warm into the 70s. Southwest Alaska will also see a chance for some thunderstorms, with highs in the 60s and 70s.The ridge of high pressure will lead to a blocking pattern across the state, with little to no movement expected for a low near the Aleutians. This will keep ongoing rain showers and breezy winds in the forecast. With the stretch of unsettled weather remaining, temperatures will remain slightly cooler than what a typical June sees. Rain looks to favor most of the Aleutians, with the activity becoming more isolated to scattered by week’s end.Wildfire activity has greatly increased this week, with additional red flag concerns later this afternoon and evening. Hot, dry and windy conditions have been with us, with relative humidity values hovering between 20 and 30 percent. While Tuesday looked to bring the most intense lightning days, we’ll see storms remain with us each afternoon and evening this week. A reminder that while lightning strikes frequently set new wildfires in the state, the vast majority of wildfires in the US are human-caused. As the saying goes, only you can prevent forest fires. Our ridge of high pressure remains with us as the week draws to a close, with temperatures continuing to warm into the 70s and 80s in the hottest spots. The Interior and areas of the Slope continue to see the warmest temperatures relative to average, with little reprieve from the heat this week. We’ll want to watch next week, as there are signs of the ridge backing off and weakening. Should this occur, expect cooler weather, more chance for showers and storms, and not as active in the thunderstorm department. If the ridge manages to hang around, temperatures will likely stay in the upper 70s and lower 80s for the Interior.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
