Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.

ANCHORAGE , AK - The Memorial Day weekend brought Anchorage and much of Southcentral the warmest stretch of weather all season. Even in the Interior, temperatures managed to top out in the upper 60s, although a 70-degree reading hasn’t been reached yet.

Fairbanks will need to hit 70 by June 7th, or it will be the latest on record for Fairbanks. Some sunshine breaks remain with us this morning, with any showery activity expected to briefly taper off for parts of Southcentral. While the first half of the day will largely be quiet, with sunshine, the second half of the day will bring showers and winds. The showers and possible thunderstorms we’ll see will build into Southcentral later this afternoon and into the evening hours. An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska will sweep to the northwest, with the better coverage for any rain along the coast, the Copper River Basin and into the Mat-Su Valley. Be prepared for some possible thunderstorm activity in the valley and through the Copper River Basin. Much like we saw through the weekend, any showers and storms will die down overnight into Wednesday, with another uptick in rain and storms tomorrow afternoon and evening. Expect slightly cooler weather this week, as highs only climb into the mid to upper 50s. Today may be the only chance this week when we see a few 60-degree readings across the region.Southeast is gearing up for a stretch of heavy rain, as an atmospheric river will bring several inches of rain to the panhandle. The heaviest rain looks to remain for the Central and Southern Panhandle, although areas to the north will still tap into heavy downpours. For today, we’ll see areas north of Juneau dealing with some dry breaks, while most of the rain stays to the south. Starting tonight, the heaviest downpours will spread across all of Southeast, with the potential of one to four inches of rainfall. Heavy rain like what Southeast will experience can bring with it the threat of landslides, so if you live in areas near Ketchikan, be vigilant of your surroundings. We’ll see the heaviest of the rain lighten up by Wednesday afternoon, with scattered to periodic showers expected the rest of the week. By week’s end, we’ll see the return to somewhat drier conditions. While Sunday will still see some lingering showers, it will kickstart a drier trend for the panhandle. We’ll largely see temperatures this week remaining on the cooler side, as highs only climb into the low to mid-50s.The Interior is still chasing the first 70-degree reading of the season, with the latest ever recorded being June 7. While there’s not a chance we’ll hit it this week, we’ll have to watch next week to see how the temperatures trend. If we manage to hit 70 degrees before June 7, it’ll be one of the latest on record and the latest in the last two decades. Lingering showers remain in the Interior this morning, from thunderstorm activity yesterday. Numerous lightning strikes were reported across the Interior yesterday, with additional thunderstorms likely this week. In addition to the thunderstorm development, we’ll see some gusty winds pick up through the Alaska Range later this afternoon into tonight. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, so be prepared to encounter gusty winds if you’re driving through the pass. We’ll see slightly cooler weather this week, with daily highs expected to top out in the low to mid-60s. Later this week, more organized showers and storms look likely for the Interior, as an Arctic front drops south. While only slightly cooler weather is expected for the Interior, areas to the north along the Brooks Range can expect to see some snow accumulation. An Arctic front is dropping south across the Slope today, leading to increasing snow and winds over the next few days. While not everyone will see snow, most of the activity looks to favor the Central Brooks Range and areas east. It’s likely we could pick up several inches of snow accumulation for these areas, where three to six inches of snow will be possible over the next few days. Additional snow looks likely by week’s end, as snow remains in the forecast. We’ll see highs this week hold in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Western Alaska will largely see dry conditions this week, with falling temperatures over the next few days. This comes as northerly winds increase, with the strongest winds expected Wednesday into Thursday. While the front responsible for the falling temps and winds will largely lead to a dry frontal passage for areas out west, we will see a chance for at least some isolated to scattered thunderstorms. Most of these will fire along the Western Alaska Range and through parts of the Kuskokwim Valley. We’ll see highs drop from the 50s today, into the low to mid-40s later this week. The Aleutians are the place to be this week, as generally quieter weather and calmer winds will grip the region. While we can’t rule out some showers for the Eastern Aleutians, most areas are remaining fairly dry for your Tuesday. While a weak low is expected to move just south of the island chain later this week, we’ll largely just see some cloud coverage increase with it. Highs this week will warm into the mid to upper 40s.May will close slightly above average in terms of precipitation for Anchorage, with fairly seasonal temperatures. As we close out May and welcome in June, cooler weather likely will grip parts of the state. A summerlike pattern has yet to grip the state, with the upcoming pattern largely favoring more rain and cloudy conditions. It’s still too early to tell just what the summer will bring, so any day with sunshine and warmth is a good day to get outdoors. We’ll likely start the first week of June off with highs in the mid to upper 50s, with 60s through the Interior.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
