Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.
ANCHORAGE , AK - Scattered to periodic rain showers remain in the forecast, with the heaviest rain staying confined to coastal regions of Southcentral and through Southwest Alaska . Much like Tuesday, rain won’t affect everyone, but the cloud cover will remain in the forecast.
There’s some good news for sunshine lovers, as Memorial Day Weekend is shaping up to be a nice one.Showers and storms fired across Southcentral Tuesday, with just scattered rain showers expected today. Most of the rain we’ve seen over the last 24 hours has been impacting the Mat-Su Valley, Kenai, Prince William Sound and only isolated thunderstorms through the Copper River Basin. Anchorage has largely managed to stay on the dry side, with an outside chance we could see some light showers throughout the day. The heaviest rain for today will remain for Prince William Sound and Kodiak, where up to an inch of rain accumulation will be possible. Much like Tuesday, some breezy conditions could build into Southcentral throughout the day, with gusts up to 35 mph possible. Our rain chances are set to fizzle out as the week draws to a close, with a nice warming trend building into the region. We’ll see highs climbing near 60 degrees this week, which could give Anchorage the first 60-degree reading of the season.A stretch of seemingly quiet weather remains for the Southeast, as only isolated to scattered showers remain in the forecast. Despite the stretch of drier weather, we’ll see little in the way of sunshine, with any sunshine breaks paving the way for fog development. The best chance for any fog will be during the early morning hours. By week’s end, we’ll see more organized rain return to the Southeast, which could pave the way for a rainier Memorial Day Weekend. Temperatures will still warm quite nicely into the low to mid-50s.A wind advisory has been issued for areas of the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp, where gusts up to 55 mph will be possible later today. Elsewhere near Delta Junction and Healy, gusty conditions are also to be expected throughout the day. While we’re still seeing some showers that will continue through the afternoon, most locations remain on the drier side. However, some thunderstorm activity could occur again later today in the Eastern Interior. We’ll see a better return of some storm coverage into the weekend, as highs warm near 70 degrees.Heavy snow from yesterday continues to lighten up, with only an inch or so of snow to be expected from Anaktuvuk east to the Dalton Highway. Elsewhere across the Slope, expect breezy winds and mostly cloudy skies. We’ll see winds steadily increasing throughout the day, with far western reaches of the Slope holding onto some of the strongest winds. Temperatures will slowly warm, reaching near freezing by this weekend. Western Alaska will see some light showers spread north to the Seward Peninsula throughout the day, with most of the rain gripping Southwest Alaska. The area of low pressure near the Alaska Peninsula continues to weaken, with most of the rain tapering off into Thursday. In addition to the rain, winds will continue to impact areas of the Bering Strait and Gambell/St. Lawrence, although winds should remain less than 25 mph. Stronger wind speeds will likely be near Bristol Bay, as the area of low pressure continues to weaken.A train of lows will keep rain and winds in the forecast, with low number one currently impacting the Eastern Aleutians and the Alaska Peninsula. This low will bring the windiest conditions this week, as gusts could peak around 50 mph today. As this low fizzles out, a weaker low will move into the Central Aleutians through Thursday. This low will provide far less rain and only breezy conditions. An even stronger low looks to arrive at the tail end of the week, with heavy rain building back into the Western Aleutians by Friday.A warm stretch of weather looks to arrive just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The Interior and Southcentral will be the big winners in warmth, as both locations will see highs climbing into the 60s and 70s. Should Anchorage hit 60 degrees, it’ll be the first time we’ve achieved that this season. If we don’t hit 60 this weekend, it could be the first time in a few decades that Anchorage has hit 60 this late in the spring.
