Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.
ANCHORAGE , AK - Sunshine has returned to Southcentral, as our marine layer is no longer with us. This will pave the way for ample sunshine and warmth throughout the day. While additional thunderstorms will be possible today across the state, it will be far less than the robust thunderstorms we saw on Tuesday.
Most areas will see thunderstorm activity greatly decreasing as the week draws to a close.Sunshine and warmth are gripping Southcentral today, with either today or tomorrow bringing the best day for highs near 70 degrees. Anchorage has yet to officially hit the elusive 70-degree mark, with 68 being the warmest that we’ve been so far. It’s likely we’ll see Anchorage warm near, if not into the lower 70s, while areas of the Mat-Su Valley and Copper River Basin will be several degrees warmer. A sea breeze along the coast will keep things cooler, with coastal regions in the mid-to-upper 60s. While we’ll stay on the dry side today, some spotty thunderstorm development is likely for northern parts of the Susitna Valley. Any storm has the potential to bring small hail and gusty winds. A reminder that fire danger remains high to very high across parts of Southcentral, so it’s advised to refrain from burning. We’ll stay on the warm side to close out the week, with rain showers and cooler weather looking likely next week.A heat advisory will go into effect for Klukwan and Haines Highway beginning at 1 p.m. this afternoon. Individuals not accustomed to these unusually hot temperatures for this region may experience heat-related illnesses. These advisories are new to Alaska this year and are meant to better communicate the risks associated with heat, which is common for Alaska this time of year. While some rain showers remain across the panhandle, only isolated to scattered activity will stick around today into tomorrow. Areas of the Southern Inner Channels look to see the best chance for rain, with all showers tapering off overnight into Friday. This weekend will bring some summer weather to the Southeast, as sunshine and highs in the 70s are likely. Soak up the sunshine and warmth, as showers and cooler weather return next week.Another warm day is expected for the Interior, as temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s. Thankfully, no heat advisory is in place. However, it will still be a toasty one for the Interior. Like previous afternoons, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop for the Interior. While not as widespread in coverage as previous days, we’ll still see the chance for some severe thunderstorm warnings. Each day through the end of the week will provide less coverage for thunderstorms, with this weekend only seeing areas of the Eastern Interior. We’ll see daily highs warming into the 70s and 80s, with a reprieve from the heat on the horizon. By next week, many areas of the Interior will see the return to just some scattered showers and highs in the low to mid-70s.Flood warnings and advisories remain for rivers just west of the Dalton Highway, where rapid snowmelt and ice jams led to flooding concerns. Those alerts remain in effect through 4 p.m. Friday. While rapid snowmelt is no longer a threat, temperatures continue to remain on the warm side. We’ll see coastal areas climbing into the 40s and 50s, while areas of the Brooks Range manage to climb into the 60s and 70s. Isolated thunderstorms remain for areas of the Slope, with the threat decreasing into the weekend. A reminder that any storm that we see will bring frequent lightning, rain and gusty winds. Small hail isn’t out of the question with any of these storms either. While not as warm as the rest of the state, Western Alaska will also continue to see a taste of summer. We’ll see highs in the 50s and 60s for the immediate coast, while inland areas warm into the 70s. While some thunderstorms can’t be ruled out for Southwest Alaska and inland areas of Western Alaska, the storm coverage decreases and shifts east this weekend. Our ridge of high pressure is leading to a blocking pattern in the Aleutians, with our area of low pressure seeing little to no movement. This will keep widespread rain, winds and cooler weather in the forecast through the weekend. While all-day rain isn’t to be expected, we will see the rain showers continuing through the close of the week. Some of the showers should lighten up early next week, as our ridge begins to lose its hold on the state. This will lead to clouds spreading across the southern half of the state, with showers possible.Although the threat of thunderstorms is decreasing with each day, relative humidity values still remain on the lower side. That combined with dry conditions, hot weather and thunderstorm potential, will still lead to additional wildfire concerns. The concern for any storm greatly dies down beyond Friday, which will give many areas a break from frequent lightning. The heat has been the story for the last week and a half, with the warmth persisting into early next week. There are signs next week that a cooler weather pattern will spread across parts of Alaska. This will bring some much-needed rain to Southcentral to help moisten up the soil. Highs next week look likely to drop back into the lower 60s for Southcentral, with the Interior warming into the low to mid-70s.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
