US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced his plans to step down, requesting the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin the process of identifying his successor. DeJoy emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition that minimizes impact on the Postal Service and the American people.

FILE - U.S. Postal Service Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testifies to the House Oversight and Accountability subcommittee, May 17, 2023, on Capitol Hill in Washington. DeJoy detailed his plans in a three-page letter he addressed to the U.

S. Postal Service Board of Governors on Monday."While there remains much critical work to be done to ensure that the Postal Service can be financially viable as we continue to serve the nation in our essential public service mission, I have decided it is time to start the process of identifying my successor and of preparing the Postal Service for this change," DeJoy said in the letter. "Today I am requesting that you begin the process of identifying a successor for my position as Postmaster General," he added. "While you undertake that process, my commitment is to devote my time and energy and being as helpful as possible in facilitating a transition that is the least impactful to the Postal Service and the American people, and that positions my successor and the Postal Service for long-term success." The USPS issued a statement Tuesday, with Amber McReynolds, who is the chairwoman of the Board of Governors, praising his efforts. “Louis DeJoy has steadfastly served the nation and the Postal Service over the past five years,” McReynolds said in the statement. “The Governors greatly appreciate his enduring leadership and his tireless efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect.” She added that “Louis is a fighter, and he has fought hard for the women and men of the Postal Service and to ensure that the American people have reliable and affordable service for years to come.”
