Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Crystal Marbin was supposed to be having surgery Wednesday morning.

That all changed when UR Medicinethat some elective and semi-elective surgeries have to be paused due to reduced shipments of IV sterile fluids nationwide.

"I’ve had time taken off of work for this," Marbin said. "It's been on my calendar for months, and I get a phone call a little bit before 11 o'clockUR Medicine Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Apostolakos said 50% of patients undergoing surgery the next three days will be impacted.

"Unfortunately, the shortage of IV fluids has made us make difficult decisions to make sure we can take care of all emergent, urgent and critically ill patients," he said. The U.S. government has approved the use of fluids from international suppliers, Apostolakos said, and teams are working to increase supplies from multiple vendors.UR Medicine said patients will be contacted directly if their procedure must be postponed, and they don't need to contact their surgeon's office.

"I feel bad, especially for people who are going through this at the time," Marbin said. "I know it’s due to unforeseen circumstances, which is really sad, but it does affect so many people.""My heart goes out to you," Apostolakos said. "Believe me when I tell you that we are trying to do everything we can to help the community and make this as short of a wait as we can for all of our patients.
