Fire crews from Harrison County Fire Rescue (HCFR) and Jackson County Fire Protection (JCFP) are battling a fire on Stephen Earl Road in Vancleave on Saturday as critical conditions prompted a Red Flag Advisory for the area.
LATIMER, Miss. — Fire crews from Harrison County Fire Rescue , Jackson County Fire Protection and the Mississippi Forestry Commission battled a fire on Stephen Earl Drive in the Latimer community on Saturday as critical conditions prompted a Red Flag Warning for the area.
Fire crews from Harrison County Fire Rescue , Jackson County Fire Protection and the Mississippi Forestry Commission battled a fire on Stephen Earl Drive in the Latimer community on Saturday as critical conditions prompted a Red Flag Warning for the area.Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said the Stephen Earl fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Another fire, located along Highway 15 north of Bethel Road, was reported shortly after. The Highway 15 fire was also fully contained. According to MFC officials, the Stephen Earl fire is completely contained, with more than 250 acres burned. According to Sullivan, the Stephen Earl fire is about 20% contained, with more than 200 acres burned so far. Sullivan said the fire has split into two fires and is endangering homes, but that crews are working to protect them.Sullivan said crews from HCFR, the MFC and JCFP were fighting the Stephen Earl fire. Agencies used bulldozers and an airplane to contain the fire, he said. Sullivan said the Highway 15 fire started when a person was working with a chainsaw on their property and sparks ignited dry woods. The cause of the Stephen Earl fire is under investigation.The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the area because of critical fire weather conditions such as low humidity and strong winds, which make firefighting more difficult than normal.
