Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth at an event

It’s going to be a very tasty summer thanks to a horror director known for sparking controversy with his unapologetic love of gore. Eli Roth’s last release was the uncharacteristically non-horror video game adaptation Borderlands, a critical and commercial flop.

Two years on from that disappointment, the man who made Hostel and Green Inferno is returning to the genre he knows best, with a bloody treat called The Ice Cream Man. Happily for those who eat up the director’s particular brand of gore-spattered horror, Roth’s course-correcting excursion back to the fright flick doman has a release date from The Horror Section. The Ice Cream Man comes out in wide release on August 7, 2026. The film’s synopsis reads, “Ice Cream Man follows an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results.” Roth co-wrote the script with Noah Belson, and produced alongside Cream Productions’ Kate Harrison, while also appearing in the film. Noted rapper Snoop Dogg contributes “additional music” alongside a score from Brandon Roberts. Orphan Black’s Ari Millen heads up the Ice Cream Man cast, along with Benjamin Byron Davis , Karen Cliche , Dylan Hawco , Sarah Abbott , Shiloh O’Reilly , Kiori Mirza Waldman, Charlie Zeltzer , and Charlie Storey . Roth first courted wide controversy with his 2005 feature film Hostel, an entry in the then-popular torture porn genre. The director enhanced the film’s spooky feel by setting its brutal action in Slovakia , but residents of that country were offended by the story's depiction of their nation as poverty-stricken and rife with violence. Roth said later that he meant no offense and defended Hostel by pointing out that, horrific as Texas Chain Saw Massacre may be, the notorious cannibal slasher did nothing to hurt the state of Texas tourism-wise. More controversy came Roth’s way with the release of The Green Inferno, an homage to classic Italian cannibal movies like the notorious Cannibal Holocaust, that came under fire for its insensitive depiction of Indigenous people. When his films aren’t offending folks with their cultural tone deafness, Roth’s movies come into criticism mostly for their lack of taste, and for the director’s gleeful use of disturbing imagery. Borderlands marked Roth's turn into a less-provocative genre, but The Ice Cream Man apparently sees him going back to scaring people, and possibly angering them.
