A stranger will transfer the victim money, like $100, and then tell them it was a mistake. The average person will be sympathetic and send the scammer $100 back. The problem is these scammers often use a stolen credit card and will collect the victim’s money, then the original payment is reversed.The seller will get the victim to use Venmo or Cash App to buy a product. Then, the scammer will send the wrong item or nothing at all. “You don’t want to be opening up yourself to losing money that way,” said Jamie Harding with AARP Alabama, who added scams like these happen every day. “Many, many cases we’ve heard of people buying things and never receiving them or buying something and getting something entirely different,” Harding said. “We just encourage everyone to know exactly who you’re dealing with, especially if you’re on a cash app which really goes directly to your bank account. Harding recommends connecting a credit card to apps like Venmo and Cash App, instead of your bank account, because credit card companies can be more helpful in these situations.
